Career Decisions Objective for September 1st, 2010 • Understand attitudes and values and what they say about who you are
What is an Attitude? • Attitude is how you react to a situation • Your reaction shapes how other people view you • Is your attitude positive or negative, happy or angry?
Positive Attitudes • These people are friendly, pleasant, and kind • They are very popular and employers tend to hire them and like to work with them
Negative Attitudes • People with negative attitudes are the just opposite • They often complain and are rarely satisfied • They think their ideas are the best and are unwilling to compromise • These people become very difficult coworkers and employers try to avoid hiring them
What are Values? • Values are all beliefs, ideas, and objects that are important to you • People have different values • Your family, friends, and community influence your priorities • Your life experiences and religious beliefs also influence them
Six Basic Values • Relationships – being close to friends and family • Responsibility – being dependable and trustworthy • Achievement – wanting to succeed in whatever you do • Compassion – caring for others • Recognition – wanting to be respected and appreciated • Courage – overcoming fear to face problems
Personal Values • Each individual has a unique set of personal values • Try to decide what is most important to you and then try to act according to your personal values Examples: If education is important to you, put your best efforts into your schoolwork…….If you appreciate good health, take time to exercise and learn about nutrition
Professional Values • These are related to work that is important to you • Take time to think about what you want from your work • Some of your values may be the same personally and professionally Example: People who value honesty with family members and friends also believe it is important with coworkers
Your Values • Being able to identify what is important to you will help you make career choices • If you believe time with your family is important, you would not be happy travelling for long periods • If you seek creative outlets, you would not enjoy working on a factory assembly line • If you value high status in the community, you might want to become a doctor or police officer • Consider your personal and professional priorities when you choose a career
