Objectives • I know the difference between traditional and alternative assessments. • I know the advantages and disadvantages of traditional and alternative assessments. • I know different types of alternative assessments and how to use them in my classroom.
Video • Assessment Made Fun
Traditional assessment • Test or exam • Questions are objective • Focuses strictly on a grade (Mueller)
Alternative assessment • Performance based • More focused on communication, not right or wrong answers • Demonstrates abilities (Bradley)
Advantages • Traditional Assessment • Tests are easy to grade • Only one correct answer • Easy to shuffle questions to reduce cheating • (Dikli) • Alternative Assessment • Allows for differentiation to support individual learners • Allows students to self-assess and peer-assess • Broader, more in-depth • Easy to connect to real life situations
Disadvantages • Traditional Assessment • Time consuming to create tests with H.O.T.S • Can restrict what is being tested • Emphasizes memorization • (Dikli) • Alternative Assessment • No one “right answer” • Time consuming to mark and produce on-going feedback
When to use each method • Lesson content: Let assessment reflect what is most important for students to learn • Learning: Let assessment enhance learning and support instructional practice • Equity: Let assessment support every student’s opportunity to learn (Dikli)
Questions • Difference between a traditional assessment and an alternative assessment? • Advantage of an alternative assessment? • Disadvantage of a traditional assessment?
Types of Alternative Assessment • Performance based assessment • Authentic based assessment • Portfolio assessment (Preston)
Performance Assessment • Based on student’s product or performance • Rubric • No surprises (Preston)
Authentic Assessment • Measures “real-life” tasks and situations • Requires aspects of performance based assessment (Preston)
Portfolio assessment • Purposeful collection of work • Defines students efforts and achievements • Assessed over time (Preston)
Closure • Traditional and alternative assessments • Advantages and disadvantages • Types of alternative assessments and how to use them
