  2. What does assessment try to achieve? • Gauging one’s (own) understanding, knowledge and ability of/in particular topic (5) • Equipping one with skills in specific areas i.e. research, critical thinking (3) • To promote and maintain high standards of learning (2)

  3. What kind of assessment do you like best? • Essay (8) • Presentations (2) • Coursework (1) • Exams (1)

  4. Why? • Essay/Coursework: able to put in a lot more time and research/develop deeper understanding (3) • Essay: more personal (1) • Presentations: enjoyable (1)

  5. What kind of assessment do you like least? • Presentations (7) • Timed essays (2) • Portfolios (1) • Exams (1)

  6. Why? • Presentations: anxiety over public speaking means you are less able to articulate ideas (5) • Timed essays: not enough opportunity for referencing (1) • Timed essays: not able to put in enough time and research (1) • Exams: constricting/not an accurate demonstration of knowledge or ability but memory (1)

  7. What are the advantages of being assessed for group work? • Group presentations good at gathering different perspectives/broader range of ideas (6) • Sharing of workload (4) • Able to work and engage with other people (2) • Growth of confidence in public speaking (1) • Getting help from others if there is a particular aspect you don’t understand (1)

  8. What are the disadvantages of being assessed for group work? • Possibility of group member who put in no time or effort getting credit for work of others /pulling down marks of group (5) • Possibility of one group member taking control/stifling ideas of others (2) • Not able to gauge individual performance/ability (1) • Can be difficult to find times/places to meet that accommodate all members (1) • Difficult to co-ordinate group work (1)
