Blood Spatter? What is it?
Blood Spatter • Blood spatter refers to the patterns made by a bloody object on another surface. • Blood spatter has many different patterns depending on what caused it and how it got there. • There are special analysts who work for the crime scene investigation team who specialize in blood spatter analysis.
Blood stain analysis • Bloodstain pattern analysis can range from the simple to the complex. The trails of blood in a crime scene or castoff blood patterns are reasonably straightforward and understandable.
Blood Droplets • If the blood is a circular drop with spikes edges then it was dripped from straight above with no spatter direction.
Cast Off Blood Stains • Cast-off bloodstains occur when blood is projected or thrown onto a surface from a bloody object in motion.
Wipe Patterns • A wipe pattern occurs when an object moves through a pre-existing bloodstain. Sometimes the object that wiped through the blood can be identified, for example a broom or a hand.
Body Image • Body image patterns occur when the bleeding body has been lying in the blood, which seeps from the wounds.
Assignment • With a partner you are to create your own blood spatter examples. • I want you to try several different ways to spatter the blood onto a piece of paper. • You will be given a weapon that is similar to the murder weapon. • You will be comparing your samples to the evidence collected at the crime scene. • You must take photographs of your samples.
Rules • You must wear a garbage bag poncho. • You are NOT allowed to spatter anything other than your paper. (A bit on the ground is ok) but this means you are not to spatter each other. • ZERO TOLERANCE FOR SILLYNESS!
Materials Needed • 1 garbage bag per person. • Gloves • 4-5 pieces of paper per group. • 1 Markerper group. • 1 Mock Weapon per group. • 1 cup per group. • One partner must have a camera/phone.
