Sports Colleges have a higher percentage of pupils involved in leadership and volunteering programmes compared to the national average and Sports Colleges showed the highest increase in the number of pupils gaining five or more A*-C grade GCSEs when compared to all specialist schools.   4. School is the perfect time for students to practice leadership: it is a safe environment where the consequences of mistakes are fairly benign and positive support is always readily available. Leader 2009

  9. Behaviour and Attendance • 9.21% increase in behaviour from when students enrol on a leadership programme until the end of the course • All Key Stage’s show an increase in attendance • Key Stage 4 Attendance 2.9% Increase (4.3% in Year 11)

Pupil Development • They are good fun • They are relevant to real life • They are assessed practically using observations (no written exams) • They help candidates get on to further training and courses at college and universities • They help candidates gain employment • They bring real life changes for some students struggling with formal education

  15. Independent Enquirers Young people process and evaluate information in their investigations planning what to do and how to go about it. They take informed and well reasoned decisions, recognising that others have different beliefs and attitudes

  16. Creative Thinkers Young people think creatively by generating and exploring ideas making original connections. They try different ways to tackle a problem, working with others to find imaginative solutions and outcomes that are of value

  17. Reflective Learners Young people evaluate their strengths and limitations, setting themselves realistic goals with criteria for success. They monitor their own performance and progress, inviting feedback from others and making changes to further their learning

  18. Team Workers Young people work confidently with others, adapting to different contexts and taking responsibility for their own part. They listen to and take account of different views. They form collaborative relationships, resolving issues to reach agreed outcomes

  19. Self Managers Young people organise themselves, showing personal responsibility, initiative, creativity and enterprise with a commitment to learning and self improvement. They actively embrace change, responding positively to new priorities, coping with challenges and looking for opportunities

  20. Effective Participators Young people actively engage with issues that affect them and those around them. They play a full part in the life of their school, college, work place or wider community by taking responsible actions to bring improvement for others as well as themselves

Leadership Principles and Top Tips • All young people need other young people who are positive role models and who are “someone like me” • Ensure that young people have a wide range of leadership opportunities that reflect their passion and interests • Ensure that there is an opportunity for young leaders to progress their level of leadership skills and their level of responsibility

  24. Leadership Principles and Top Tips • Young people engagement is at the heart of young people leadership • Ensure young people have the opportunity to be leaders beyond their school environment • Make sure there is an adult in the school who has a student voice for leadership
