  2. Zionism Definition:Zionism is a movement for establishing the state of Israel. Argument for a Jewish State:Following extended persecution in Europe, at the end of the 19th century, Jewish intellectuals argued that their people could only flourish by establishing a Jewish state.

The Creation of the Israeli State 1900s – Zionists began buying land in Israel for Jewish settlements. 1922-1939 Jewish population in Palestine reaches 30 % of the population. 1917 – British issue Balfour Declaration, pledging to help establish “a national home” for Jews in Palestine. 1940s– The Holocaust leads hundreds of thousands of refugees to immigrate to Palestine.

  4. The Creation of the Israeli State (Cont.) 1947 – UN Mandate partitions Palestine between Jews and Arabs. 1949 – Zionists seized a large portion of land the UN had designated for Palestinians. Why would this lead to conflict?
