Dry-Type vs. Oil-Type Transformers DRY TYPE TRANSFORMER OIL TYPE TRANSFPRMER Uses insulating oil for cooling, offering better heat dissipation and potentially higher efficiency Uses air circulation with fans for cooling, making them suitable for indoor and environmentally sensitive locations. Cooling Requires precautions due to flammable oil, regular oil level and quality checks are necessary for maintenance. Can be more cost- effective in the long run due to higher efficiency, can handle higher voltage applications. Eliminates risk of oil leaks and fires, requires less maintenance overall. Safety Generally less expensive upfront, but may have lower efficiency. Often limited to lower voltage applications. Cost and Voltage Fan noise can be a factor, especially in applications where quiet operation is desired. Generally quieter than dry-type transformers due to the absence of fans.
