US joined the Allied Powers • It was called a world war because many nations were involved in the conflict • US soldiers were called dough boys.
Tension between US and Germany because of the Zimmerman Telegram and Unrestricted Sub Warfare • US changed its policy because of the sinking of the Lusitania • Americans helped by buying liberty bonds, women replaced men's jobs, wheatless/meatless days, victory garden • Impact of US troops – helped to win the war
Expeditionary forces led by John Pershing • Techniques used were trench warfare, new technology • Women helped by replacing men’s jobs, assembled planes, drove trolley cars and delivered mail, served as nurses • Results – Germany is blamed, Wilson’s 14 pt. Wilson’s 14 points – was not accepted, included freedom of the seas, no secret alliances, no barriers to trade, League of Nations, peace without victory • Treaty of Versailles – blames Germany, Germany had to pay reparations, League of Nations, reduce military • Zimmerman Note – Germany proposed a deal with Mexico that if they helped in the War effort they would gain their land that lost to the US
Lusitania – British passenger ship that was sunk, many people died, Caused the US to join • League of Nations – was proposed by Wilson, US didn’t Join because congress didn’t approve because we would be pulled into future wars
