Adjectives • Words that describe nouns • In Spanish, adjectives usually go AFTER the noun, unlike English where they are before the noun. • The serious students. Los estudiantesserios.
In Spanish, adjectives must match the gender (masculine / feminine), and the number (singular / plural) of the noun it is describing.
Adjectives… • Adjectives that end in –e match both genders. • El maestro inteligente • La maestrainteligente • Many adjectives that end in a consonant match both genders. • El amigo joven • La amigajoven • Some adjectives that end in a consonant add –a to form the feminine singular. • El chicotrabajador • La chicatrabajadora
Making adjectives plural • To make an adjective plural, use the same rule as nouns: • Add –s if it ends in a vowel • Las chicastrabajadoras • Add –es if it ends in a consonant • Los chicostrabajadores
