Return to contents page Solids . Gases do not keep their shape or always take up the same amount of space. They spread out and change their shape and volume to fill up whatever container they are in. • •Solids keep their shape. They do not flow like liquids. • •Solids stay in one place and can be held. • •Even though they can be poured, sugar, salt and flour are all solids. Each particle of salt, for example, keeps the same shape and volume. • Is sand a solid ?
Liquids Return to contents Liquids and gases can flow.. Gases can be squashed. •Even when liquids change their shape, they always take up the same amount of space. Their volume stays the same. •Cooling a gas can turn it into a liquid.
Gas Air is the gas all around us. It is a mixture of several different gases, mainly nitrogen and oxygen. The air we breathe here on Earth is made up of different gases. It contains around 78% nitrogen, 21% oxygen, 1% argon and a small amount of other gases. These are the 3 states of matter Without air we cannot breath and fires won’t burn. It supports balloons and aeroplanes. Natural gas comes from the ground. It burns easily (flammable) Natural gas is used as a fuel for heating.
