1. 2014 Jr. Miss & Mr. SCMS Pageant Sponsored by Teen Living & FCCLA (Family, Career and Community Leaders of America)

2. Introduction • Saturday, May 3, 2014 • Doors open at 3:00 pm / Program begins at 5:00 pm promptly • Hair and Makeup should be completed before arrival • Contestants should arrive at least 30 min prior to pageant. DO NOT BE LATE…YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO COMPETE • A beauty pageant is a competition that mainly focuses on the physical beauty of its contestants, although the SCMS pageant will incorporate personality and answers to judges' questions as judged criteria. • The goal of the pageant is to promote self-esteem and public-speaking abilities of the contestants.

3. Photographer • Carla Lynn Photography will only take formal pictures of contestants BEFORE the pageant begins • Action shots throughout the pageant • Final court picture

4. Round One (All 40 Contestants): • Lady in Red (Dressy/Casual Attire) • Must have primary color as Red. May include Gray, White and Black. • No Jeans, tube tops, spaghetti straps • Dress / Skirts must be fingertip length • Contestants will introduce themselves during the Lady in Red category. • Example: Hello. My name is Sara Brown. I am a 7th grader. My favorite subject is Science. My favorite teacher is Ms. Herrin because she allows candy in her room. I hope you enjoy the pageant! • Formal Attire (Long Pageant Gowns or Long Prom Dress) • 20 Male Ushers will assist the contestants in their walk-through • All Contestants will vote on the Ms. Congeniality : Congeniality means easy to get along with; sociable; friendly. A congenial person is considered to be good company in various circumstances, compatible. • 30 minute intermission (Concessions Provided)

7. Round Two (Top 15 Contestants) • Formal Attire (Long Pageant Gowns or Long Prom Dress) • Contestants will have an onstage interview. • Questions will be given to contestants three weeks before the pageant for their preparations. • Make sure you have a good brief answer for each question on the Potential Pageant Interview Questions list • 20 Male Ushers will assist the contestants in their walk-through.

A congenial person is considered to be good company in various circumstances, compatible. • Mr. SCMS(Awarded by high scores from Ushers)

9. Preparation • Every pageant starts with the application form, which you should read and fill out carefully because it will introduce you to the judges before they set eyes on you, and it will be in their hands when you make your first appearance. • Mention any youth groups, sports clubs and church activities you regularly attend, and give an indication of your reasons for participating. • Mention any unusual hobbies you might have because that will increase the interest of the judges and give them something to ask you about. • Pointing out good grades is also a good idea.

10. Posture and Poise • Walking straight with your head held high is a sign of good posture, which is essential at a pageant. • Good posture can best be achieved by being active and doing workouts that strengthen the belly and lower back muscles that hold you erect. • Poise and grace are a bit more difficult to achieve, as they should be part of your natural behavior.

11. Makeup and Hair • Makeup is allowed but we suggest a moderate approach to the color scheme and amount applied. • When dealing with your hair, a good hairdresser or stylist is your best bet to succeed. • Look up hairstyles of pageant winners online, and take printouts of your preferred looks to the hairdresser to discuss the options and suitability to your facial features.

13. Lady in Red Casual Wear • Must have primary color as Red. May include Gray, White and Black • The casual wear portion of the pageant can test your creativity. Choose apparel that shows who you are and what you are about. • This portion of the competition produces more different looking outfits than formal wear. Dresses for the casual wear portion of the competition should be "dressy casual" in style, not formal dresses. • Clothes that are appropriate for an office or religious services are also appropriate for the casual wear in pageants. It should be well-fitted and not too tight or baggy. • Solid colors are better than prints or multi-colored dresses. Dress fabrics that are too shiny sometimes look cheap in the bright stage lights, so test the fabric under bright lights or avoid shiny fabrics. • A conservative hat is also appropriate. • Choose shoes to match the dress and do not over-accessorize. • Attire that reveals midriff, bust, and/or shorter than knee length will not be permitted. Contestants will not be allowed to participate in the category. Dress Code will be strictly enforced.

14. Formal Dress • For many, the dress is the most important aspect of the pageant. However, it is not the dress itself but the way you wear it that makes it special. Choose a dress that is age-appropriate and that makes you feel good when you wear it. • Formal floor length presses will only be allowed. Contestants will not be allowed to participate in the category if they have incorrect attire. Dress Code will be strictly enforced. • Search online for pictures of pageant winners in the middle school category and evaluate their dresses. If you see something you like, spend some time finding it and even more time trying out various options. • Typically a formal dress is floor length, prom/pageant style. Take along someone you trust, not necessarily your best friend as she might be competition. Your mother, sister, aunt or even dad might be best suited to give constructive criticism. • Make a plan: Take into consideration every factor of the process from beginning to end when looking for the perfect dress: Budget and timing, Style Research, Fitting, Practice walking in it.

23. Ushers • Fee Payment and Application does not entitle you as an SCMS Usher. An assessment will be given to SCMS Teachers. • The top 20 high scored applicants will be awarded as an Usher for the Junior Miss SCMS Pageant • Accepted Ushers must be committed to practices with the pageant contestants
