  2. WHAT ARE GREEN AUTOMOBILES? • Green automobiles such as the Toyota Prius and Nissan Leaf, are vehicles that are environmentally friendly • They don’t run on gasoline Automobiles that run on fuel alternatives display America’s progressiveness into an environmentally conscious and economical society.

  3. THE CAUSE OF DEVELOPMENT • In the 1900s, Ford had a vision to create affordable cars that were accessible by everyone • Liege, 1906-1910 • Auto-Mixte cars were built with Henri Pieper’s hybrid system • Global warming • Air pollution • Rising oil prices

  4. CARS IN HISTORY

  5. Hallo PORSCHE • FERDINAND PORSCHE LohnerElectric Chaise, 1898 • First gasoline-electric hybrid • Combustion engine runs a generator that powers electric motors • Battery is good for 40 miles

  6. Hallo PORSCHE SemperVivus • 1900 • Series hybrid • Incredibly difficult to steer • Similar to the Chevrolet Volt

  7. PIEPER vs. FORD • March 2, 1909 • HENRI PIEPER: US patent for the first gas-electric hybrid • Bad Timing  1908: Ford releases the Model T “It would cement the primacy of gasoline engine to power road vehicles” • Result: Steam/electric cars fade to the back • 1930s: Hybrid and electric vehicles are no longer in production

  8. FORD MOTOR CO. • Established in 1905 • 1908 release of the Model T • Simple, light, study for the poorly maintained roads • Main focus: Affordable cars for everyone • 1910: 34,000 cars at $700 each • 1916: 730,000 cars at $316 each • Introduced Fordism • “Economic system based on mass production and mass consumption”

  9. HYBRIDS TODAY: TOYOTA PRIUS • Prius is Latin for “to go before” • Late 1995: first prototypes wouldn’t work • “On the computer, the hybrid power system worked very well… But simulation is different from seeing if the actual part can work” –SATOSHI OGISO, chief powertain engineer • Gas- electric • “…first vehicle to provide a serious alternative…” • Batteries were troublesome  • Shut down when it was too hot/cold

  10. HYBRIDS TODAY: TOYOTA PRIUS • Finally released in October 1997 in Japan • July 2000, U.S. debut • Wasn’t liked • Took 13 seconds to get to 60 mph (Corolla only needed 10) • Sold in more than 40 countries • “…the most fuel efficient vehicle sold by the U.S. EPA” Best selling hybrid in the U.S. • 2007: More than 180,000 sold • Early 2008: Hit all time record of 20,000 sales

  11. HYBRIDS TODAY:SMART CAR “Smart is an acronym for Swatch Mercedes Art” • Daimler- Benz, 1994 • First meeting • Subcompact, eco-friendly, affordable, safe • 2004: Debut in Canada • 2008: Debut in America • The last to have them • Available in 37 countries • Popular in Paris, Barcelona, London, Rome

  12. HYBRIDS TODAY:SMART CAR

  13. HYBRIDS TODAY:NISSAN LEAF • 100% renewable energy = NO POLLUTION! • Zero emissions • Charge and go! • Able to go 100 miles when fully charged • Gets to 80% in 30 minutes • Solar panel on the roof allows it charge in the sun • Able to reach 90 mph

  14. HYBRIDS TODAY:NISSAN LEAF • OLIVIER CHALOUHI • First man to use a Nissan Leaf • 2010 All- electric • By the end of 2011, they expect to put out 50,000 more Leafs • Including tax credits, it costs: $20,280

  15. HYBRIDS TODAY:FORD FOCUS • Ford Explorer 2011: soy foam cushions • Using more bio-based soy foam • “…ongoing effort to use more renewable and recyclable materials” • More than 2 million vehicles on the road that use bio foam • Reduce petroleum oil usage by 3 million lbs. • Reduce carbon dioxide emission by 11 million lbs. • Also used in Lincoln and Mercury • “The new Explorer will deliver fuel economy at least 25 percent better than the current model as well as include sustainable materials like soy foam seat cushions and other eco-friendly features we will detail soon,” -AMY MARENTIC, group marketing manager, Ford cars and CUVs • Plan to use biomaterial for deflectors, cupholders, and floor mats

  16. RUSSIAN HYBRIDS • Mikhail D. Prokhorov invests in green car movement • Moscow, December 2010: debut of theYo • 2- door car, minivan, small cargo van first natural gas hybrid electric vehicle • 67mpg- better fuel economy than the Prius (51mpg) • Uses a rotary vane • First patented in 1874 • Used today in superchargers, power steering, transmission pumps • Chief engineer:ANDREI G. GINZBERG • Limited use in Germany (1930s), cast off except in the Soviet Union • Developed in secrecy @Novosibirsk

  17. WATER POWER • Developed by DENNY KLEIN • Able to burn a hole through steel, but doesn’t hurt you if you touch it • Runs on HHO • Lasts for 100 miles

  18. THE IMPACT • Stimulated the expansion of other products economy • Promoted tourism and growth of suburbs • Automobiles have become the backbone of economic growth • More people are looking into hybrids and other fuel alternatives

  19. “Let’s check for understanding’’_ - Mr. Wilder • What was the name of the first gasoline- electric hybrid developed? • How has the Ford Motor Co. impacted the automobile industry? • One of the fuel alternatives is “all electric,” in the long run, is it better to be dependent on gas or electricity? • Taking into consideration the versatility of water, do you think water is a reasonable alternative?
