Automobile’s Main Emissions • Carbon Monoxide (CO): In the U.S. 60% of CO is caused by on road vehicles. • Particulate Matter (PM10 and PM2.5): in 2002 about 1% of all PM10 and 2% of all PM2.5 emissions came from the exhaust of on road motor vehicles. • Carbon Dioxide (CO2): Motor vehicles are calculated to generate about 20% of the European Union’s man-made CO2 emissions. • Mono-nitrogen oxide (NOx): in a 2005 US EPA (environmental protection agency) study the largest emissions of Nox came from on road motor vehicles.
Consequences of the Carbon Monoxide • People with asthma and bronchitis are especially vulnerable. • 1 in every 50 heart attacks in London may be triggered by car emissions • Carbon monoxide poisoning is similar to suffocation.
Consequences of Particulate Matter • The elderly, individuals with heart of lung diseases, children, and/or asthmatics or asthmatic children are at most risk from exposure. • Do not breathe in these fine particles as they can trigger asthmatic symptoms. • Due to the fact that that children’s respiratory systems are still developing they are more vulnerable to environmental threats such as Particulate Matter
Consequences of Carbon Dioxide • Global warming • Depletion of the ozone layer • Destruction of crops • Breathing related diseases • Extinction of various species
Consequences of Mono-nitrogen oxide • NOx are a serious health threat for people in high congested areas • Nox can be linked to reparatory diseases such as: bronchitis, emphysema because the particles are inhaled causing damage to lung tissue.
How to reduce Emissions • Ride a bicycle or carpool to decrease the amount of cars. • Turn of ignition when at a drive- thru or in congested traffic. • Have your vehicle inspected on a regular basis. • Buy a more energy efficient car; one that produces less emissions. For example a Prius which is half electric half gas.
