STRUCTURE INTRODUCTION STUDY FBG IN CBD &OTHER PART IN HK REVIEW CASE OF GZ,SZ,SINGAPORE SUMMARY ANALYSIS IMPROVEMENT PROPOSAL
FOOTBRIDGE GREENING FOOTBRIDGE GREENING (FBG): INCLUDED GREENING • ON THE CANOPY OF FOOTBRIDGE • AROUND THE COLUMNS • AT THE EXTERNAL SIDE OF BARRIER • AT THE INTERNAL SIDE OF THE BARRIER • AT THE TERRACE OF THE FOOTBRIDGE http://www.guangzhou.gov.cn/node_2230/node_2353/node_2357/img/2009/08/19/1250645234307125_3.jpg http://pics.oeeee.com/f/1e/f1e2b2c9255d5525/Thumb/10571/dcgc280909.jpg http://www.yljizhi.com/uploadfile/image/2011012716123673499.jpg
WHY FBG? As part of urban greening,FBG has similar impacts toward the environment as urban greening: • Aethestics • Mitigation of the thermal environment • Improvement of the microclimatic environment on the footbridge • Absorb the noise and dust • Promote better health for human being • Promote better emotion for human being Limitations to the plants • Tough site condition • Soil hardness • Surround by automatic exhaust and dust • Insufficient light
FBG IN GUANGZHOU As one of the cities conducted FBG very early in China,GZ has total 45 bridges equipped with greening. Greening spaces: • At the external side of the barrier • Cover the pier surface Irrigation methods: • Manual way • Sprinkle and drip irrigation Major species: • On the footbridge:Bougainvilleaspectabilis,Lantana camara, Hameliapatins and Parthenocissusheterop • Around the pier:Ficuspumila ,Syngoniumpodophyllum Government meassures:”Technical specification of vegetation on footbridge and cloverleaf intersection” has been issued in 2007
FBG IN SHENZHEN Shenzhen is one of the very initiative citis who lauched the footbridges greening, since year 1996. Planting styles: • In the planter hanging on the external of the barrier • Climb on the surface of the pier • Climb on the traction network Plants species: • Jasminummesnyi, Lantana camara,Lantanamontevidensis,Lonicerajaponica,Campsisgrandiflora, Vitishybrid,Pyrostegiavenusta,Wedeliatrilobata, Allamandacathartica, Bougainvillea spectabilisWilldand so on. Government regulation:In 2001, Shenzhen government promote to set up the first “Overpass Hanging Greening Constructions Specifications” local technical standard, furthermore, from then on,bridge greening would be included in the urban greening.
FBG IN SINGAPORE Shenzhen is one of the very initiative citis who lauched the footbridges greening, since year 1996. Planter spaces: • Planter is part of the footbridge, look like terrace of the footbridge • Hang on the external of the barrieres • Climb on the surface of the collumn Irrigation methods: • Manual way • Sprinkle and drip irrigation Technologies: • Vegetation Bag (Mainly applied in viaduct bridge) • Wall mounted three-dimensional combination flowerpot
TECHNOLOGY APPLY IN SINGAPORE Planter built as terrace under the footbridge construction Vegetation bags Aqua Storage Tank Planting bags Planting container Installation rack Joint shackle Irrigation systems are equipped in this flowerpot, consist of pipeline, timer, flowcontroller, nutrient pool Applying the Planting bags is convenient to renew the plants and maintenance. Joint shackle
STUDY AREA The study area is CBD Footbridge Systems located in Central,Hong Kong. Hong Kong: • Belong to subtropical monsoon climatic zone • Notable rainfall of 2380 mm per year • Typhoon would heat Hong Kong • High biodiversity • Large population of 71.3 million • Have land area of 1104 km2 with hilly terrain The cities grow “vertically”,pedestrian footbridge networks (or skywalks) are found in both commercial and residential developments. Therefore,Footbridge greening ,serving as an efficient mitigation to improve the microclimate on the footbridge indeed worth our attention. Study area the CBD Footbridge Systemis an extensive footbridgenetwork spanning Admiraltyand Central, near Victor Harbourin Hong Kong.It covers an rough area of over 13850m2.The whole area were seperated into three parts,Part I,Part II and Part III,show in fig.2. II I III PLANTING AREA BUILDINIG N FOOTBRIDGES AREA
PART I Footbridges of Part I are the major connection between transport junctions(ferry and metro station) • Total length:1500M • Total greening area:150M2 • Greening ratio:1.5% • Private (belong to IFC Building) Footbridge Greening space N Maintenance intervals:Water every 2 days,fertilize1 or 2 times every month Maintenceway:Manual Plant species:Strobilanthestetraspermus+Platycladusorientalis+Aglaiaodorata+Scindapsusaureun+Forsythiasuspensa
PART II Footbridges of Part II started from PedderStreet, end at the IFC Building. • Total length:470M • Total greening area:310M2 • Greening ratio:9.7% Ownership:Private(belong to IFC Building) & Public Maintenance intervals:Water every 2 days, fertilize 1 or 2 times every month (Private) Water everyday ,few fertilize (Public) Maintenance ways:Both are manual Plant species(Private): Bauhinia corymbosa+Lorpetalumchindensevar+Dianellaensifolia Plant species(Public): Bougainvillea spectabilis+Asparaguscochinchinensis
PART III Footbridges of Part III started from IFC Building to the China Mechant Tower. • Total length:500M • Total greening area:410M2 • Greening ratio:12.6% Ownership:Public Maintenance intervals: Water everyday ,few fertilize (Public) in Manual way. Plant species(Public): Bougainvillea spectabilis+Asparaguscochinchinensis,Scindapsusaureun,Rhododendronhybrida , Clerodendrumthomsonae, Scheffleraodoratacv.variegata
FBG IN OTHER PART OF HONGKONG Footbridge greening in Waichai As images shown on the left, the plants were in worse condition for lacking in maintenance and sunlight. As on some footbridge, the width is just 3.5m,the potting plants on this footbridge could cause congested on the footbridges. . Footbridge greening in MongKok ,a remarkably compacted urban area, greening become luxuries for the citizens.Only a few number of potting plants sparsely display on the so long footbridges. The plants are uneven and lacking in nutrition and sunlight.
CHALLENGES IN HONG KONG • Climatic challenges: • Typhoon • Frequent rainstrorm • Heavy rain • Environmental challenges: • Surround by automatic exhaust and dust • Insufficient light • Tough site condition • Crowded footbridge limit growing spaces • Maintain difficulties • Safety
EXPERIENCE FROM SINGAPORE,GZ,SZ • From GZ: • Sprinkler and dripping irrigation systems(need further research) • Issue the regulation to promote FBG • Automatic maintenance • From SZ: • Explore more suitable plant species • Enhance green ratio (need further reaearch) • From Singapore: • Vegetation bags (need further reaearch) • Included planter built during footbridge construction • Wall mounted three-dimensional combination flowerpot(need further reaearch)
PLANTING STYLES COMPARISON After making comparison, only to find that the first planting is the most suitable one for Footbridge greening, especially in Hong Kong, then the fifth one take the second place, but some improvement may undertake.
PLANTS SELECTION • Prequisite: • High temperature resistence • Shade tolerant • Drought resistence • Disease resistence • Wind resistence Therefore,Vind and ground cover plants should be given priority, thenshrubs.Plants applying in Singapore and Shenzhen may also used for Hong Kong Footbridge Greening after appraisal.
IMPROVEMENT PROPOSAL • More attention could be paid to the remedy dificiencies on footbridge greening • Suitable spaces should be reserved for planters during footbridge construction • More research could be done to explore plant species and corresponding resistence • Gardener should be assessed by the government for knowledge and skill
IMPROVEMENT PROPOSAL FOR CBD • PART I: • Vine plants, not block visual view • Strengthen maintanence • PART II: • Enhance the biodiversity • Strengthen maintanence, fertilization • PART II: • Plants with good adaptivity could be selected first • Strengthen maintanence, fertilization
THE END THANK YOU!
