  1. Apples on a Pink TableclothOil on CanvasHenri Matisse Apples on a Pink Tablecloth is the piece that I am critiquing. It was made by Henri Matisse in 1924.

  2. Description There are five apples, four orange and one green. There is a jug. These are on a table with a pink tablecloth. There is wallpaper in the background with floral print. This piece is oil on canvas. The elements of design are well represented throughout the piece, including line, shape, color, form, value, texture, and space. Apples on a Pink Tablecloth

  3. There are many relationships between the elements. • The piece’s emphasis is on the apples. • The piece is balanced out by the vertical stripes. • There are normal proportions. • The apples, the motif on the tablecloth, and the designs on the wallpaper have patterns. • I see the apples first, then the rest of the piece. • The piece is unified through the repetition of various subjects, such as the apples or the wallpaper design. There is variety because there is a green apple. There are slight variations to each subject. Analysis

  4. Interpretation • I think that the one apple that is green symbolizes how people can be different, but still have things in common. The artwork shows that people can get along, no matter what their differences are. • This idea is represented in many of my classes. In Georgia Studies, sometimes the people we learn about have been treated differently because of how they look.

  5. Judgment • I think that the piece did convey how the world can be peaceful, but it seemed slightly boring to me.
