  10. The Cycle • All non-tenured are “active” • One third of tenured teachers are “active” • Two thirds of tenured teachers are “inactive”

  11. Self-assessment • All teachers, every year • Based on Alabama Quality Teaching Standards • Five standards/38 indicators (Content Knowledge, Teaching and Learning, Literacy, Diversity, Professionalism) • Rarely/Sometimes/Frequently/Almost always/NA • Comment/reflect/note

  12. Goal Setting/Reflection • All teachers, every year • Set 1 or 2 goals based on self-assessment • Goal setting conference for “actives” only • Reflect on progress at the end of each semester • Turned in and filed

  13. Classroom Observations • Non-tenured teachers—announced 1st semester, unannounced 2nd semester • “Active” tenured teachers—unannounced both semesters • Post observation conference: Observation, Goals, Other areas

  14. Focused Observations • Non-classroom teachers (librarians, counselors, technology coordinators, etc.) • Observe what they do • Non-tenured—unannounced both semesters • “Active” tenured—unannounced both semesters • Post observation conference: Observation, Goals, Other areas

  15. End of Year Conference • All non-tenured and “active” tenured teachers • Discuss goals and reflections • Discuss observations • Discuss other pertinent topics/areas/data • Begin planning for next year • Signed and kept in personnel file

  16. Next Steps • Present to Board • Begin orientations in the spring • Obtain waiver from state, fall of 2011 • Implement plan, fall of 2011 • Revise after one year
