  1. Changes in the Earth Science Reference Table from the 2001 Edition to the 2010 Edition Jonathan Schweitzer, Earth Science Teacher Belmont Preparatory High School 500 E. Fordham Rd Bronx, NY 10458 January 2010

  2. 2010 Edition ESRT • Starting in January of 2010 student were required to use the 2010 Edition of the ESRT. • Earth Science teachers should be aware that there are substantial differences in the specific information and how it is presented in many of the tables, graphs, and charts of the new edition of the ESRT. • Almost 50% of the January 2010 Physical Setting/Earth Science questions on the Regents Examinations were based on the use of the ESRT.

  3. Example of Change • Same the graph, “Relationship of Transported Particle Size to Water Velocity” (2001 and 2010 editions), but different X and Y scaling change the line of the graph. 2001 2010

  4. Jan 2010 : Question 45 • 45 Which stream velocity carried only clay particles to the depositional environment where the shale formed? • (1) 0.02 cm/s (3) 10 cm/s • (2) 0.05 cm/s (4) 20 cm/s

  5. Another Example 2001 2010

  6. Jan 2010: Question 83 • 83 Some of the incoming solar radiation is absorbed by the floor. Identify the type of electromagnetic energy reradiated by the floor. [1] • — infrared, microwaves, radio waves

  7. OLD 2001 Version New 2010 Version Calories/gram Joules/gram Page 1 Removed (see below) Table was on page 11

  8. Radioactive Decay Data Table • Disintegration Column • # superscripts now appear before the element symbol

  9. Eurypterus remipes • Full Scientific name • All Caps to Caps and Lower Case • EURYPTERUS Eurypterusremipes

  10. Properties of Water Table

  11. Old Page 2 New • Reverse shading for land and water • “Interior Lowlands” added • Compass Rose • Map Scale • Straight dashed line for “Landscape • region boundary”

  12. Old Page 3 New Cretaceous and Pleistocene (Epoch) “Tertiary” was removed Late Triassic and Early Jurassic – “basalt” was added

  13. Old Page 4 New Entire map is shifted 160 degrees east

  14. Old Page 5 New Ring of fire is centered.

  15. Old Page 6 New Velocity Range is .01 To 1000 cm/s Velocity Range was 0-800 cm/s Diameter Range is .0001 To 100 cm Diameter Range was .00001 to 100 cm

  16. Page 6 cont’d • Same

  17. Page 7 • Values written in reverse • 0.2 to 0.00 6 cm is now 0.0006 to 0.2 cm • 0.006 to 0.0004 cm is now 0.0004 to 0.006 cm

  18. Old Page 7 cont New

  19. Old Page 8 New The page now ends at NY Rock Record The page previously ended near the middle of Time Distribution of Fossils

  20. Old Page 9 New Names Removed Column Removed

  21. Old Page 10 New Density values adjusted

  22. Old Page 11 New

  23. Old Page 12 New Shaded rows between white rows

  24. Old Page 13 New

  25. Old Page 14 New Scale adjusted Wavelengths removed (very notable!) Tropopause was solid; now dotted

  26. Old Page 15 New Hertzsprung elongated and shifted down-left; SS data chart flattened

  27. Old Page 16 New Illustrations removed Many updates to Uses and Characteristics Mineral name and Composition columns Swapped.
