  3. a) Precontemplation: refusing change in lifestyle b) Contemplation: thinking about change c) Preparation d) Action e) Maintenance • Depending on life circumstances lifestyle move back and forth from one stage to another • Relapse is less likely after the maintenance stage is reached

  5. Age, gender, heredity, social status and current health/fitness are Personal factors that affect health behaviors but are out of control • Predisposing factors (getting you started) are associated with 2 basic questions: Am I able? and Is it worth it ? They can help you to move from contemplation  to preparation  - Feeling that you are able means that you have good perception of competence (self confidence and self efficacy) - You will make change in behavior if you think your effort is worthwhile

  6. Enabling factors help to take step toward action and maintenance - Self assessment - Self monitoring - Goal setting……….. • Reinforcing factors (support) move people from action to maintenance and to stay there ‘ to stick with a behavior change’ - Reinforcing factors are family, peer, and health professional influence

  7. 3. Self- management skills for changing predisposing, enabling and reinforcing factors : Table 1,2 and 3 • * Self- management skills  are very useful in promoting lifestyles that enhance health, wellness, and fitness: • Self-assessment skills • Self-monitoring • Goal-setting • Planning skills • Performances Skills • Balancing attitudes • Overcoming barriers • Learning consumer skill • Finding social support • Preventing relapse • Adopting coping skills • Managing time • (lab 2A) • * Table 4 to practice SM
