Why • Explorers set out for many reasons. • 3 Gs: • To find wealth (gold) • To spread Christianity (God) • To expand empires by claiming new territory for their countries (glory) • To find a faster sea route to Asia
What was the impact? • European countries expanded their control over new lands. • Columbian Exchange- the transfer of culture- people, language, religion, ideas, food, animals, plants, diseases, technology- between Europe and America. • Native Americans are devastated by diseases. • Enslaved Africans are brought to the Americas.
Can you put it all together? • Between the 1400s and 1600s, European explorers from Spain, France and England sailed to America in search of faster sea routes to Asia, to find gold, spread Christianity and expand their empires. As a result of exploration, their was a transfer of cultures between Europe and the Americas, known as the Columbian Exchange, which included the devastation of Native Americans and the introduction of African slavery to the Americas.
