Sigmund Freud 1856 - 1939 • His theory states: Childhood experiences, even when forgotten, affect a person’s actions and personality as an adult. • Id–present @ birth, instinct, seeks pleasure & avoids pain • Ego –decides between the demands of the id & the superego • Superego –The moral part of your personality • Founder of modern psychiatry

  5. Jean Piaget 1896 - 1980 • Interested in intellectual growth. Noticed that children first learn by using their five senses.

  6. B.F. Skinner 1904 - 1990 • His theory states: Children respond to a system of rewards and punishment. Research is based on positive and negative reinforcement.

  7. Maria Montessori1870-1952 • Based teaching methods on Piaget’s theories. Stressed the importance of practicing motor skills and interaction with the environment. -self-motivated learners, recognized the value of play
