Jawlensky • Born in Torschok in 1864 but grew up in Moscow from when he was 11 • Studied at the Alexander Military School of Moscow • Later enrolled at the Academy of Art in 1889 • Moved to Munich in 1896, where he met Vasily Kandinsky and began his experimentaion with color • After being expelled from Germany in 1914 during WWI, he moved to Switzerland
Jawlensky • Hélène Nesnakomoff gave birth to his only son, Andreas, and then they married in 1922 • He was ill throughout his whole life and was forced to stop painting in 1937. • He died in 1941, with 12 of his pieces noted as “memorable” • Some include: Head in Blue, Violet Turban, Meditation, and Astonishment
