Introduction In order to appreciate All Quiet on the Western Front, we must meet the people, listen to their music, and understand the politics of the era. Adding to what you already know about World War I, you will build yet another link to the past. Were the soldiers on either side really so different? Are the issues that divided the world in 1914 still prevalent in today’s military hot spots? When the dust settled, who really won and what did they win? You decide. The Task • As a prequel to reading All Quiet on the Western Front, each group of four will research aspects of World War I and create a twenty-five slide Photo Story of pictures and songs representative of the times. • In addition, each person in the group will complete and hand in The WebQuest Dossier, a collection of answers from your Internet probing. • Finally, each group will write a letter to the local Veterans of Foreign War (VFW) Council. The Process Mission 1: Photo Story • Select 3 songs from the World War I Era and save onto your desktop. Make sure to save the title. • Each person in the group will find and download six different pictures relating to the category selected (for a total of 24 pictures). The categories are Trench Warfare, Technology, Propaganda, and Human Interest Stories. Save to desktop. • Using the Photo Story program learned earlier, create a story featuring three songs, 24 slides (six from each category), a personal voice over, a title slide, and a final slide noting group member names. • Present the Photo Story to the class. The Process, continued Mission 2:The WebQuest Dossier • Download, complete, and hand in the WebQuest Dossier (Scavenger Hunt). • Research using the web sites provided. All answers can be found on these sites. • Every student must hand in a Scavenger Hunt. Please note: Answers may vary. Click on the link below to access and print the Scavenger Hunt. The Process, continued Mission 3: The Letter • As a group, type a formal letter to one of the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW’s) Posts. Using what you have learned about World War I, Veteran’s Day, and the sacrifices of war, acknowledge and affirm their service and that of all fallen and wounded soldiers. Conclusion The goal of this WebQuest was to help you understand the life, times, and sacrifices of those involved, on all sides, in the war to end all wars. As you begin to read Remarque’s, All Quiet On the Western Front, put faces on the characters, hear their songs, and participate in the heated discussions on the morality of war.
