Activate – Defining Threes • In groups of 3 you are going to test each other to make sure that you can define the following: • To use language univocally and equivocally • Cognitive and non-cognitive statements • Analytic and Synthetic statements • Tautology • Metaphysics • Eschatology • Blik • Anthropomorphism • Analogy and Sign • Fideism

Preparation for speed learning date You MUST know: • The Vienna Circle, Logical Positivism and the Verification principle • Difficulties with the Verification Principle • Weak Verification Principle (Ayer) • Criticisms of the Weak verification principle • The Falsification Principle (Flew, the response of Hare [blik] and Mitchell) • The Via Negativa and strengths and weaknesses • Use of analogy (attribution and proportion from Aquinas), symbol (Tillich) and myth (Bultmann). Evaluation of these. • Wittgenstein and Language games

  5. Demonstrate evaluation • Someone will be picked to verbally articulate A02 Evaluative skills in relation to anything covered in the unit on Religious Language

  6. The Debate Game ‘The verification principle offers no real challenge to religious belief’ RULES: 1.You will be scored on preparation, contribution, and quick thinking 2. Only one person may speak at one time. • 1 Minute on what you think of the title, and why you are correct. (you will be given a view) • 30 second on why others are wrong. • Ask a question to each group. (they will have ten seconds to nominate a person and then respond) • You will then have 1 minute to prepare your closing statement.

  7. Essay plan • ‘The verification principle offers no real challenge to religious belief.’ Discuss (35 marks)
