Why Expand? • What were the reasons for American Expansion? (Hint…look at your american imperialism notes)
Where did the U.S. Expand to? • Caribbean islands • The Philippines • Hawaii • Latin America
The US expanded its Sphere of influence: The region in which a country exerts it’s power
How did the Spanish American War help America Imperialize? • Spain Frees the Philippines • U.S. buys the Philippines • U.S. goes to war with Filipinos who want independence • 200,000 die from malnutrition, disease and guerrilla tactics such as burning villages • 1902 U.S. annexes the Philippines
Another result of the War… • Spain frees Cuba • Cuba becomes a Protectorate of the United States • An area protected by the U.S. but with strings attached (the U.S. could intervene whenever it wanted)
Spain turns over Puerto Rico to the U.S. and it became a Commonwealth of the United States Commonwealth • An independent country with certain privileges in another • U.S. Citizenship • U.S. Protection …But lacking certain rights ( i.e. the right to vote )

How we got it… Hawaiians During the 1890s, they were led by Queen Liliuokalani (Li-lee-uh-woh-kuh-LAHN-ee) Hawaii once belonged to a native tribe called Wanted “Hawaii for Hawaiians” Threatened American Investment U.S. organized a revolution Hawaii was annexed on July 7, 1898 (After Queen is overthrown) Annexed = Added on

The Panama Canal • French construction: • 1880-1893 • 22,000 workers died US construction: • 1904 - 1914 • 6,000 workers died • Paid Panama $10 Million for it
