Eg the visitors book • What kind of tone does the author use? Eg foreboding

3. Significance of key passages • What is the context of the passage? • Beginnings? Endings? Crisis points? Turning points? Resolutions? • Relate context to characterisation, narrative development, central ideas and concerns • Look for insights into motivation, values and goals of characters • Typical aspects of writer’s style • Use of: recurring images and words; structure; dialogue; voice.

4. Connections between features of a text • Explain links between the way the text is written and what is being said? Contrast Lily’s local knowledge with Skinner’s global knowledge and language • How does structure affect the readers experience? Eg Non-Linear plot • How is characterisation related to views and values? • How does imagery convey central preoccupations and ideas/ • How does narrative voice position the reader?

5. How to relate closely to the text • How does the narrative create the mood or feeling of a passage? • Don’t describe; analyse! • Use evidence from the text to support your statements about the text • Always explain the significance of the quotes you use • Use a serious and formal tone
