Infection Control Terms • Microorganism
Pathogen • Nonpathogen • Probiotics= • Treat IBS • Efficient digestion • Protect against pathogens
Types of Pathogens • Exogenous • Infection / Disease that originate outside the body • Ex. = Pathogens that invade the body • Endogenous • Infection / Disease that originate within the body • Ex. = Cancer, Metabolic disorders
Nosocomial • Infections acquired in a hospital /long term care facility • Transmitted from healthcare worker to patient • Prevention = Handwashing & PPEs
Opportunistic • Infections that occur when the body’s immune system is weak • Ex. = HIV pt., Cancer pt.
Bacteria • Multiply rapidly / Classified by shape • Antibiotics used • Cocci (round shape) • Streptococcus / Staphylococci • Most common • Bacilli (rod shape) {Able to form spore} • Difficult to kill • TB, Pertussis, Tetanus • Spirilla (spiral shape) • Syphilis / Cholera
Protozoa • Found in decayed material / contaminated water • Contain flagella (tail like) to move freely • Cause Malaria, Dysentery, African sleeping sickness
Fungi • Plant like organisms that lives in the environment • Contains spores • Tinea (Ringworm) • Athlete’s foot • Candida
Virus • Smallest pathogen (hardest to kill) • Cannot reproduce unless they are inside another living cell • Resistant to disinfectants • Common cold, chicken pox, flu, Hepatitis, HIV
