HAI’s The Perfect Storm HAI Defined Infection that arose 48 or more hours after admission Was not incubating at the time of admission Considered prevalent when it meet one or more signs or symptoms included in a CDC definition Most are preventable.   4. The Literature Increases in HAI prevalence with increasing age. Largest percentages being: 75 and up, UTI’s 75 and up, Gastrointestinal infections Under 75, surgical incisions Factors include: Increased frailty Immune impairment Nursing homes, still like a hospital from infection stand point Nutritional status Couple handling life curveballs well.   5. The Literature RTI’s are the leading cause of death in nursing homes in France. Widespread infection was possible if infection control measures were not implemented within two days. Average length of time between the start of the infection and the control measures was 6.7 days. Infection Control: What can we do? • Handwash! • Proper hand washing for the healthcare providers is one of the greatest infection control defenses against HAI. • Practice sterile technique • Improving sterile technique is a great way to help reduce the possibility of HAI’s • Used for catheters, wound treatment, and many other treatments. • Help each other! • When a peer is doing something incorrectly let them know • Don’t be mean, you’re on the same team!

  7. What else? • Verbalize your opinions about a patient • Disease can be prevented within a group of patients by the control of one. • Even if you’re wrong it’s better to stay on the side of caution when it comes to a community of patients. • You’re the patients advocate • Do what you think is right for the patient • Always question • i.e. Why is this patient scheduled for a flu shot out of flu season
