SHIMEL? • Salutatorian ~ West Branch High School • Played flute in band, chorus, volleyball, basketball, and softball , was a majorette, in tons of clubs like NHS, yearbook, etc. • Have a Bachelor of Science in biology ~ Lycoming College (softball, band, choir) student taught with Mr. Hescox ~Williamsport • Taught 4 years in southern Maryland at Great Mills High School, was the color guard advisor and coached softball
MS. SHIMEL INFO… • Substitute taught at Clearfield, Philipsburg-Osceola, and West Branch and worked at a bank 4 years before coming to Bellwood • 2nd year at Bellwood-Antis ~ marching band/color guard • Love to read (Harry Potter ~ Twilight Saga) • Love to watch sports in person (LLWS) • Speak Spanish ~ college minor • What (school appropriate) do you want to know?

Ex: Ms. Shimel = Most often Seeking Science Knowledge…
WHAT WILL WE DO THIS YEAR? • Study cell structure and function • Identify/describe the Kingdoms of life • Dissect ~ study anatomy of organisms for comparative anatomy • Study ecology and environmental issues • Learn about important scientists and lab equipment and perform labs in class • Prepare for the PSSA next year for science and meet as many of the state standards as possible
WIKISPACE FOR MS. SHIMEL • http://msshimel.wikispaces.com/ • Pictures of some things we will see and do in this class this school year…
WHERE DOES YOUR GRADE COME FROM? • Grades are based on POINTS • Bell-Ringer question each day is worth 5 points = 1 for date, 1 for question, 3 for response • Homework (usually 5 points per assignment) • Absence Journal (15 points) • Participation (in labs, discussions, Do Nows) • Labs (can be up to 100 points) • Quizzes (usually only 50 points or fewer) • Tests (mostly 100 points~based on percentage)
RULES • Follow the rules outlined in the student handbook • Respect yourself, respect others, and respect all property! • Be ready with all materials in your assigned seat when the bell rings. • Speak at appropriate times, use appropriate language, and appropriate voice levels. • You must do what the class is doing.
CONSEQUENCES • 1st offense: Warning! ~ talk to student about problem behavior/issue at hand • 2nd offense: Confer with student ~ Detention may be assigned ~ Parent Contact • 3rd offense: Detention assigned ~ Parent contact ~ Contract created if necessary • 4th offense: In-School Suspension ~ Referral to Principal • *Extreme Clause = If necessary, immediately removed from room and referral to principal
UNDERSTAND??? • Almost anything will happen one time. Hopefully we can work together to help you make better decisions in the classroom. In most cases, you will receive a warning 1st. • If you choose to break a rule a second time and have had a warning in the past, a detention will be assigned and parent contact will be made. • If the same incident occurs a 3rd time, a detention will again be assigned and it might be beneficial to start a behavior contract to prevent the same behavior from occurring in the future and to help you to make better choices. • On the 4th occurrence, there is a definite problem that needs to be corrected so an in-school suspension will be assigned. The principal will be notified to help remediate the situation.
WARNINGS • Warnings will be written: • Correct your behavior • Get back on task • See me after class • We will have a chance to discuss issue at hand • I have documentation on record of infraction • We do not further disrupt the class at the time of the incident saving time and/or embarrassment
WRITTEN WARNING • Read it • Sign it • Keep it until the end of class when we meet/discuss…
FOLLOWING RULES AND PROCEDURES WILL RESULT IN… • Verbal acknowledgement • A stress-free learning environment • A pleasant and orderly classroom atmosphere
PROCEDURES • I have many procedures we will discuss and practice = EXPLAIN, REHEARSE, REINFORCE will be the pattern… • I have many goals that we will work toward • I will be fair and consistent • I am a content area expert, have a plan for each class, will follow the curriculum outline • We will work and learn and do ~ together!
