  1. BROWARD READING ENDORSEMENT ADD-ON PROGRAM - 2011 What’s New and What You Need to Know! Terri Coyle Secondary Reading Curriculum Specialist tcoyle-rdg@browardschools.com NOVEMBER 2011

  2. Who Needs the Endorsement? • Teachers with any certification who teach reading in grades 7-12, but are not certified in reading, must have reading endorsement. • All Reading Coaches and Reading Resource Specialists are required to be reading endorsed. • Teachers in grades K - 6 are not required to be reading endorsed. 6th grade classes must be pure 6th only!

  3. What is the difference between Reading Endorsement and Reading Certification? • The Reading Endorsement is a “rider” to other certifications. It is made up of 15 university course credit hours (or 300 inservice points). • Teachers with 30 university course credit hours or a Master’s Degree in Reading must take the reading certification test to earn the K-12 reading certification.

  4. What is the Reading Endorsement Comprised of and How Can It Be Earned? The reading endorsement is comprised of 6 competencies. The reading endorsement can be pursued through either the following tracks:

  5. Paths to Reading Endorsement • Broward Reading Endorsement Add-on Program • State DOE Approved College Coursework

  6. Workshop Combination Track Consisting of district staff development (face-to-face and online courses) One training/course option to satisfy each of five competencies, plus the Practicum. Follow the Workshop Combination Track Plan of Study Sheet and the Workshop Combination Track Procedures!

  7. Virtual University Track Consisting of five district developed online courses, plus the Practicum. Follow the Virtual University Plan of Study Sheet and the Virtual University Track Procedures!

  8. How can I access current information about the Reading Endorsement? Check the Reading Endorsement Conference in CAB on a regular basis. This conference is in the Instructional Resources folder. Reading Endorsement information is also available on the Virtual University website: www.sbbc-vu.com

Forms You Should Have: • Approved Courses List - 2010 • Procedures for Workshop Combination Track or Virtual University Track - 2010 • Plan of Study Sheet Workshop Combination Track or Virtual University Track - 2010 • Portfolio Guidelines (for WCT) - 2010 • Practicum Protocol(min. 4 copies) – 2010 • Lesson Plan and Reflection Templates - 2010
