  2. General Information • A five year struggle that began in 1970 led to the capture of Phnom Penh in 1975. • Communist Khmer Forces made all cities and towns evacuate. • More than 1 million people were displaced and died from either starvation or execution.

  3. In 1978, Vietnamese soldiers invaded Cambodia and made the Khmer Forces retreat into the countryside. • This was the beginning of almost 20 years of fighting. • In 1993, the United Nations sponsored elections that helped to restore some stability to this highly volatile area of the world.

  4. 1998 marked the first national elections in Cambodia. • As a result, a coalition government was established. • The Khmer forces that remained finally surrendered in 1998.

  5. Location • Absolute: 13º North Latitude and 105º East Longitude. • Relative: Southeastern Asia. Between Thailand, Vietnam, and Laos. Orders the Gulf of Thailand.

  6. Place • A bit smaller than the state of Oklahoma. • Climate: Tropical and rainy. Not too much variation during seasons. Experience monsoons from May to November, and dry season from December to April.

  7. Terrain is mostly low. There are flat plains as well as mountains in the Southwest and the North.

  8. High Point and Low Point • Phnum Aoral is the High Point. • The Gulf of Thailand is the Low Point.

  11. Languages: Khmer is the official language being spoken by approximately 95% of the population. The remaining people speak either French or English. • Capital is Phnom Penh. • Natural Hazards: Monsoon rains from June to November flood the land. In the off season, they have droughts. • Gained independence from France on November 9, 1953.

  12. Human and Environmental Interaction • Illegal logging throughout the country. • Illegal Strip Mining. • Habitat loss and loss of biodiversity as a result. • Loss of Mangrove Swamps. • Soil Erosion • Shortage of potable water. • Toxic waste from Thailand is dumped here.

  13. Movement • Railways • Highways • Waterways • Ports and Harbors such as Kampot, Krong Kaoh Kong, Phnom Penh. • Airports: total 21. Only 5 are paved. 16 are unpaved.

  14. Illicit Drugs • Some government corruption regarding Narcotics. • Small scale production of Opium, Heroin, and Methamphetamine. • Large amounts of Cannabis are grown. • Money laundering is done here as well.

  15. Region • There is a complete boundary with Thailand. • Vietnam is accused of moving and destroying boundary markers. • Thailand and Cambodia argue over access to religious places. • Offshore islands are in debate with Vietnam.
