My Journey through the maze of Digital Media! Glenda Cable
How Difficult has this class been for me? • The last time I was in college, I used a typewriter!
Gimp Blender Before Digital Media… • I thought this was a derogatory term that was taboo to use! • gimp • Slang . • –noun 1. a limp. • 2. a person who limps; lame person. • –verb (used without object) 3. to limp; walk in a halting manner: a sprain that made her gimp for weeks. Margaritas, anyone?
A digital native is a young person who was born during or after the general introduction of digital technology (1980), and through interacting with digital technology from an early age, has a greater understanding of its concepts. • A digital immigrant is an individual who was born before the existence of digital technology and adopted (or tried to) it to some extent later in their life.
Digital Media is like learning a foreign language to me! • Inkscape ? Posterization ? • Lossy & lossless ? Bitmap? • Quantization rate ? Bezier curve? • Huffman tree? Convolution Mask? (are these real words?) ___________________________ • Even spell check tried to change the spellings to make Real words!
In Conclusion • If you are an Immigrant, like me, you have to put forth a lot more effort(just ask Stephen in AES) than the normal college student to succeed in digital media. • Professors (like Dr. Xu has done) must evaluate “immigrants'’ work on how much they have learned-and NOT compare to a “natives’” work!
Surprisingly, I have learned programs that will help me when I graduate and am teaching the ‘natives’!
