Water For People World Water Corps Presentation May 1, 2008 Vancouver, WA 06M-0033.20
Water For People’s strategic plan addresses growth, efficiency, accountability, and sustainability. The underlying goal is to make a more meaningful impact in the regions in which Water For People works and on the global water crisis that is devastating people in the developing world.
Over the next five years, Water For People will focus on …. • Strategic growth • International programs delivery • Resource development • Organizational excellence Communications is a critical component of all of these goals.
Our organization supported 188 communities in our program countries Directly benefiting more than 108,000 people with access to safe water and improved sanitation Thousands more received hygiene education to ensure improved health for years to come Our Accomplishments in 2007
Volunteers in the Field Goal: • Allocate resources to the field and use volunteers proactively to build capacity and enhance learning in the organization
What it is • World Water Corps is a voluntary arm of Water For People • Uses skills from North America strategically to fill gaps in program work that cannot be filled in-country • Augments and supports, as needed, the capacity of Water For People
What it is not • The World Water Corps is not for volunteers wanting to construct community water supply and sanitation systems!
Building Capacity, not Systems • Are the systems sustainable? • Are all the key local role players involved or just the community and maybe an NGO? • Are back-up issues of maintenance and replacement addressed? • Is it consistent with Water For People’s approach? • Does it undermine local contributions to development? • Is this the best use of Water For People’s network?
Regular Opportunities Monitoring of program work (annual) Evaluations (every country every 3 years) Mapping/Needs Assessments (every 2 years Country-Specific Needs Advocacy/ Communication in Bolivia Building a local NGO’s management capacity in Malawi Hydrogeology in Honduras Opportunities to Enhance Sustainability
