Key Components of HB 5 • Allows greater flexibility in the Foundation High School Program (FHSP) with endorsements • Expands available CTE courses that will satisfy the requirements for endorsements
Key Components of HB 5 Reduces End-of-Course Exam Requirements Algebra I Biology US History English I (r+w) English II (r+w)
Core Requirements of The New FHSP • 4 English (Eng I, Eng II, Eng III, and advanced English) • 3 Math (to include Alg I and Geom) • 3 Science (to include Bio) • 3 Social Studies (W. Geogor W. Hist, US History, Gov’t, and Econ) • 1 PE • 1 Fine Art • 2 credits of the same foreign language • 5 electives
The FHSP with Endorsements With few exceptions, ALL students will be required to earn an endorsement in one of the following areas: • STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) • Business and Industry • Public Services • Arts and Humanities • Multidisciplinary Studies The pathways that students in Humble ISD have already chosen in Bridges fit under these endorsements. We will not know the specific requirements for each endorsement until some time in the 2013-2014 school year.
The FHSP with Endorsement Each endorsement requires 26 credits total, including: • 4th math • 4th science • 2 additional electives
Distinguished Level of Achievement • To earn the distinguished level of achievement, students must complete: • The FHSP • An endorsement • Algebra II • Students completing the distinguished level are eligible for college admission under the Top 10% automatic admissions provision.
What happened to the old graduation plans? Students currently in 8th, 9th, and 10th grade may graduate on the graduation plans now in place (MHSP, RHSP, DAP) or may choose the FHSP. The current plans will be phased out over time.
So what possible changes might students make to their 2013-2014 courses should they choose the new FHSP graduation plan? Current juniors in Cohort 2014 will not be allowed to graduate under the FHSP UNLESS they are unable to meet the requirements of the current graduation plans. Current juniors who think this provision may work for them should make an appointment with a counselor to discuss this option.
So what possible changes might students make to their 2013-2014 courses should they choose the new FHSP graduation plan? Very important: Students can NOT mix graduation plans; if a student chooses the new FHSP, s/he must complete ALL requirements of FHSP

When Considering FHSP . . . • Think about the student’s chosen pathway • Which science & math courses will be needed? • Think about which college/university the student plans to attend • Which science & math courses are required for admission and/or chosen major? • Realize we don’t know all the details of the FHSP • Will the student have an opportunity to complete all the requirements of the FHSP with endorsement?
Student Procedure for Course Changes • 1. Review next year’s requested courses on the attached verification sheet. • 2. Student Procedure for Course Changes 4. If you wish to graduate on the new Foundation High School Plan (FHSP), make the appropriate potential changes in Bridges. Write the same changes on your course verification sheet, have a parent sign it, and return that sheet to your counselor by Friday, May 31. We will make these changes once HB 5 becomes a law. Remember: The FHSP may have other course requirements that are not currently in your graduation plan. You will be informed of those requirements as soon as we know them. Please watch for new videos on our district website, www.humbleisd.net. *Students receiving services through Special Education may need to have course changes approved by an ARD Committee. Course Plans in Bridges will be locked again June 3rd. If you wish to make changes after that date, contact your campus to speak with a counselor.
