3. Autobiopoem about your child • Please create an Autobiopoem about your child. If possible, please type and include clip art and/or pictures of them in the background. Complete and send the printed copy with your child before the end of next week. 5. Word Study/Grammar/Writing • Leveled “Red, White, and Blue” weekly spelling words/tests every other Friday. List is always in a small resource packet for the two-week theme period. We’ve added prefix and suffix words to the lists this year. • Vocabulary words (10 per theme) and activities to practice. • The Writing Process will be implemented throughout the year. Students will be completing one major writing piece each grading period. Genres include narrative, persuasive, and informational. • Writing Journal • Writing conferences will help them learn how to REVISE because believe me……the first draft isn’t “good to go”! 

6. Reading • The children will be involved in various types of reading • “just right” novels each day from a variety of genres • No Nightly Reading Log - We will not have a formal reading log this year. HOWEVER! • A novel should be read within an “average” two-week time period-three if it’s a chunky Harry Potter type book; therefore, students will need to read at home. • Small Guided Groups & Individual Reading Conferences - children will have goals & recognize their strengths and areas to work on as readers • The children will be involved in various types of writing based on their reading. Extended Responses and Sparky notes. • Snapshots • Scholastic Books (sent home monthly – complete online or send in with check made out to Scholastic Books)

7. Social Studies/health and Science • United States History with TCI online review at home (http://www.learntci.com) Logins have been sent home. • Map Skills of Regions of the United States, Native American Tribes, Explorers, Colonies, Revolutionary War, Government, the Constitution, and the Bill of Rights. • 5th grade teacher goals focus on Social Studies this year, so there will be an emphasis in this subject! • Time For Kids magazine subscription this year (worldly events). • Ruth Lilly trip “Life Begins” • Science on a rotating teacher schedule starting the last nine weeks

8. JA Biztown Students will learn the basics of economics by learning social studies standards in the classroom and a simulation experience at Junior Achievement Center at 79th and Keystone. They will learn concepts such as supply and demand and wants and needs while integrating math skills balancing the books and balancing a checkbook. There will be elected officials, designers and owners of businesses, DJ’s, and even police officers to keep peace. Parent Volunteers are needed for both job interviews and the field trip. Job interviews will be held at CWE. Sign Up sheets for those events are on the back table.

9. Summative and Formative Assessments • Most grades will be based on summative assessments. • Summative assessments are to determine mastery of a skill after exposure and practice in the classroom. • Examples include chapter assessments, extended response questions, formal writing assignments, and ongoing assessments. • Most summative assessments will be completed in class, unless it is a home and school project.

10. Formative assessments are used to practice a skill but not used to determine mastery. • Examples of formative assessments are vocabulary activities, grammar homework, spelling activities S.S. notebooks, Math boxes, Math study links, and writer’s notebook.

11. Transportation Changes • Please make changes by 1:00 PM! • If I do not receive a request, I have to honor their normal transportation routine. • Access through the CWE website or myCCS • Transportation link is on the left side of the webpage.

12. Homework • See daily assignment notebook and teacher website • Spelling words will be given on Monday with a test every other Friday • Children should readnightly. • Reading, writing, grammar, or word work activities not completed during Daily 3 independent literacy time will be finished at home • Social Studies text should be reviewed for upcoming tests (TCI online program) learntci.com.

13. Late Work/Work Habits: The assignment, if late, must be completed by 8:15am the next day. Their work habits and homework completion grade will be affected. A homework or behavior concern will be communicated to you through their Cardinal Cash register, and a conduct/work habits report will be emailed to the address on file. • Kids feel good about themselves when they learn to assume the responsibility and are successful. Please assist them at home when organizing materials and homework for the next day.Eventually, they’ll be able to do it on their own. 

14. Conduct and Work Habits • School-wide Cardinal Rules Tickets • Cardinal Cash is the classroom management system for behavior and work habits. Students are given $180 in Cardinal Cash at the beginning of every nine weeks. For many infractions, they are given two warnings before their Cardinal Cash register is marked and you receive conduct/work habit report. • At the end of the nine weeks, students cash in their money for privileges in the classroom.

I check before school, during specials, and again at the end of the day.

16. DONATIONS • Yes, candy is still a motivator! Shhh! • We’ll use this with our Loyd’s Loot, Cardinal Rules, and just as general rewards throughout the year. (Tootsie rolls, candy kisses, Air Heads, Jolly Ranchers, lollipops, Smartees, small Hershey bars, etc.) • Hand Sanitizers (big and small) • Clorox wipes • Ziploc baggies (any size, including snack size)

17. Math • Everyday Math “Workshop” structure with more time to work with small groups and individual students. • The assessment piece looks slightly different this year. • “Show What You Know”, or exit slips, help me to form small groups for extra practice or enrichment for the next day. • Challenge packets including activities covering chapter concepts to work on when finished with work. • Chapter tests (Study guides will be given in advance with plenty of in-class review) A heads-up will be included in the tentative plans through email of any upcoming tests. Reminder: Everyday Math is available online through Myccs. There are great games, and you can access the SRB (in case they forgot their book!) I sent the codes home last week.
