A good Thesis…… • It states the essay's subject -- the topic that you are discussing. • It reflects the essay's purpose -- either to give your readers information or to persuade your readers to agree with you. • It includes a focus -- your assertion that conveys your point of view. • It uses specific language -- avoids vague words and generalizations. • It includes one claim and three supporting statements

  4. Bad Thesis or Good thesis • The War of 1812 came before the Civil War.

  5. Bad or Good Thesis • Body piercing among contemporary youth represents the latest form of rebelling against authority that previous generations manifested in smoking, getting tattoos, and wearing mini-skirts.

  7. Bad or Good Thesis • News coverage of military actions undermines their seriousness.

  8. Bad or Good thesis • Television producers reduce war to the status of popular entertainment by featuring highlights of air strikes and peace-keeping missions on the news, undermining the audience's appreciation of the seriousness of military actions, desensitizing viewers to violent images.

Cite Evidence • Directly quote, or cite, information to provide evidence for your answer. • “Why do we study history?” Becomes… • “We study history because it teaches us lessons that can apply to today. For example, the article says that ‘the leaders of WWII studied strategies from WWI before making decisions.’

  12. E. Explain your answer • Beyond just providing evidence, you need to explain how your answer in your own words. • This is the LONGEST part of your response. • “Why do we study history?” Becomes… • “We study history because it teaches us lessons that can apply to today. For example, the article says that ‘the leaders of WWII studied strategies from WWI before making decisions.’ By studying the history of the war that came before, the leaders of WWII were able to apply past lessons to make the best decisions in their current time.
