Word Lesson 1-Word Basics Task 1
About Word • Microsoft Word 2007 is the word processing application • Enables you to create letters, memos, reports, and other text-based documents.
Start Word • Two basic ways to start Word • Double-click the Microsoft Word Icon on the desktop • Click the Start button on the Windows taskbar
Explore the Word Window Title bar Scroll bar Insertion point View buttons Scroll arrow Status bar Zoom Slider
Create a New Document • A new blank page is displayed when you open Word • Word assigns Document1 as the document name until you name it during the saving process • Document’s name is displayed on the title bar
Enter Text • When text is entered beyond the right margin, the insertion point automatically advances to the next line – word-wrap • Press Enter only at the end of a short line or to begin a new paragraph
Change Default Settings • Defaults are the preset settings • In Word 2007, the default font is set to Calibri, 11 point • Line spacing is set to 1.15 • Paragraph spacing is set to 10 point after each paragraph • If you change a setting for a document but do not change the default, the setting will apply to that document only.
Use AutoCorrect • Automatically replaces common capitalization, spelling, grammatical errors, and mistyped words with the correct text as you type. • Can set to insert specific words by entering an abbreviation in the AutoCorrect dialog box • Can enter word commonly misspelled in the AutoCorrect dictionary • When a word is corrected by the AutoCorrect feature, a blue horizontal line appears below the corrected word
Use AutoFormat As You Type • The AutoFormat As You Type feature automatically formats text as you type it. • Change the option as you want for example two hyphens to a dash, fractions 1/2 to ½ and ordinals such as 2nd to 2nd superscript.
Check Spelling and Grammar As You Type (Shortcut Method) • A word with a possible spelling error is underlined with a wavy red line • A grammatical error is underlined with a wavy green line • An error in word usage and style is underlined with a wavy blue line • When a spelling or grammar error is detected, the Proofing button on the status bar shows an “X” on the book rather than a writing pencil
Check Spelling and Grammar • Entire Document at Once • In addition to checking individual errors as you type, you can check your entire document or parts of the document at one time, using the Spelling and Grammar feature. • Different Ways to Use Spelling and Grammar features • Spelling and Grammar button • Press F7 • Click Proofing button on status bar
