  1. Infusing Technology into the Common Core Letia Cooper, Instructional Technology Specialist M.Ed. www.techwithtia.com

  2. Common Core Creation • 45 States have Officially adopted the Common Core Standards. • The Standards build upon the most advanced current thinking about preparing all students for success in college and their careers. • Standards are meant to provide clarity and rigor • Standards are research based and apply higher order thinking skills.

  3. Common Core Benefits • Professional Development will be based on best practices. • Common Assessment and Tools will be developed for all states. • Creates a fairer comparison of policies and achievement between states and districts • Creates collaboration across the states and districts for curriculum and professional development purposes.

  4. Key Points in English Language Arts • Reading • Stresses complexity in reading and developing reading comprehension skills. • Students should be exposed to a diverse array of classic and contemporary literature. • Ensuring that student’s are exposed to classic myths and stories from around the world, foundational U.S. documents, seminal works of American literatureand the writings of Shakespeare. The standards appropriately defer the many remaining decisions about what and how to teach to states, districts, and schools. • Writing • The ability to write logical arguments based on substantive claims, sound reasoning, and relevant evidence is a cornerstone of the writing standards, with opinion writing—a basic form of argument—extending down into the earliest grades. • Research—both short, focused projects (such as those commonly required in the workplace) and longer term in depth research —is emphasized throughout the standards but most prominently in the writing strand since a written analysis and presentation of findings is so often critical. • Annotated samples of student writing accompany the standards and help establish adequate performance levels in writing arguments, informational/explanatory texts, and narratives in the various grades.

  5. Key Points in Mathematics • K-5 • Emphasis on whole numbers, addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, fractions and decimals. • The K-5 standards provide a detailed guidance for teachers on topics such as fractions, negative numbers, and geometry, and do so by maintaining a continuous progression from grade to grade. • The standards stress procedural skill and conceptual understanding, to make sure students are learning and absorbing the critical information they need to succeed at higher levels. • Middle & High School • A strong foundation in K-5, Prepares students for hands on learning in geometry, algebra and probability and statistics. Students who have completed 7th grade and mastered the content and skills through the 7th grade will be well-prepared for algebrain grade 8. • Students to practice applying mathematical ways of thinking to real world issues and challenges. • The high school standards emphasize mathematical modeling, the use of mathematics and statistics to analyze empirical situations, understand them better, and improve decisions. When making mathematical models, technology is valuable for varying assumptions, exploring consequences, and comparing predictions with data.”

  6. Technology In The Common Core • Use technology and digital media strategically and capably. • Students proficient in technology will be better prepared for college and careers. Schools must prepare students for the jobs of tomorrow . • Technology is being used in our classroom to collaborate, create content, and solve problems.

  7. Common core resources 4 Teachers • Common Core Initiative • Thinkfinity.org • Mastery Connect also available in the App Store • EduCore • Hunt Institute Videos • P 21 Common Core Toolkit • Achieving the Common Core • Share My Lesson • Consortium Common Assessments

  8. 21st Century Learners will • Produce and Publish Documents • Interact and Collaborate • Communicate Using Web Tools • Evaluate Information Presented in Different Media Formats

  9. Technology in ELA • They use technology and digital media strategically and capably. • Students employ technology thoughtfully to enhance their reading, writing, speaking, listening, and language use. They tailor their searches onlineto acquire useful information efficiently, and they integrate what they learn using technology with what they learn offline. They are familiar with the strengths and limitations of various technological tools and mediums and can select and use those best suited to their communication goals.

  20. Technology in Mathematics • Use appropriate tools strategically.Mathematically proficient students consider the available tools when solving a mathematical problem. These tools might include pencil and paper, concrete models, a ruler, a protractor, a calculator, a spreadsheet, a computer algebra system, a statistical package, or dynamic geometry software. When making mathematical models, they know that technology can enable them to visualize the results of varying assumptions, explore consequences, and compare predictions with data. Mathematically proficient students at various grade levels are able to identify relevant external mathematical resources, such as digital content located on a website, and use them to pose or solve problems. They are able to use technological tools to explore and deepen their understanding of concepts.
