  1. MĀORI AND PASIFIKA TIKANGA KIA ORA

  2. PURPOSE We are a UN organisation, and we hold a great amount of responsibility in representing the UN in New Zealand. UNDRIP ICERD New Zealand is positioned in a unique setting when it comes to indigenous rights and minority groups. It is important that we take an active role in recognising Māori and Pacific values.

  3. An active role in developing the community. • Improving Education. • Improving our Skills. • Developing our sponsorship opportunities PRACTICAL BENEFITS What are the practical benefits of implementing changes to our organisation in order to encourage Māori and Pacific membership.

  4. Local iwi: • South Island • Wellington • Auckland • Local church groups, particularly Pacifika based groups. • Te Kura Kaupapas. • TePuniKōkiri. • Ministry of Youth Development. • Māori and Pacific networks at University. • Active role in communication regarding our events! • We need to build lasting relationships, not just focusing on the success of OUR event. COMMUNICATION COMMUNICATION IS THE KEY!!! But who are we supposed to be communicating with??

  5. Incorporating te Reo: • Whakamana • Key greetings • MIHI! • Event development for other NZ cultures. • Mana • Speakers and representatives. • WE ARE THE UN IN NZ! HOW CAN WE RECOGNISE MĀORI AND PACIFIC TIKANGA The next step is recognising Māori and Pacific tikanga in our events and our organisation. This can include a formal reocognition on our website, the use of te Reo at our events and in our communications, and adopting and integrating Māori and Pacific values into our educational objectives of our events.

  6. Manaakitanga – he tāongate reo. • Rangatiratanga – he kaha ki te whakaara i te iwi. • Wānangatanga – te whakatōi te kākāno • Whanaungatanga – te here i te taurāherengatangata. • Kōtahitanga – te hāngai tētahi ki tētahi. • Mōhiotanga – kiarauahia ki te waha. PRACTICAL IMPLEMENTATION AND COMMUNICATION How can we implement something we don’t understand?

  7. Discussion. • Identification. • What are we doing well and why? • New ideas? • We want to see communities involved with us. • Should we identify ethnicity in membership? RESULTS I want them, we need them!
