  1. University of Luton Dept of Computing and Information Systems Adrian Benfell, Nik Bessis & Michael Niblett Teaching and Assessing Generalist Masters Students using a Multi and Inter – Disciplinary Approach

  2. Introduction The University and our Department. MSc Programmes (Specialist & Generalist) Student profiles Lectures, Practicals and Tutorials How we teach: The use of course work…………………

  3. Multi – and inter disciplinary approach to teaching databases • Other modules: • Applied Programming; • Secure Data Communications; • Internet Development; • and our exemplar (Case Study) • Data modelling and Management: • Systems Development Techniques; • 4GL; • UML; • ER Modelling (normalisation); • Deployment (Oracle Developer 9i / MS Access).

  4. Secure Databases Assignment • PATIENT Request advice/treatment NHS DIRECT (a telephone based patient advisory service) for NHS patients seeking medical advice/ who feel ill etc Advise (verbal) Refer patient Emergency or to GP RDBMS Secure XML Messaging Visit/admission RDBMS GP Surgery (where patient is Registered) (OR) Hospital (Emergency or out patient admission) Secure XML messaging LOCUM (out of hours GP visiting service RDBMS

  5. Case Study • Rationale, aims and objectives. • Assessment strategy: • Use of case studies: • Chosen by students; • Based upon past experience; • Group work. • Module leader approach: • Monitoring; • Personal challenges; • Student achievement; • (First cohort following this teaching approach).

  6. Data Modelling & Management Assignment • XAC05-6: Group Coursework Assignment-Part 1&2 • CASE STUDY • As a group team (group team should consist of no more than 5 and no less than 4 students) you are required to develop and implement a database system for an application area to which your group has experience and/or is familiar with. It is suggested that this should either be a booking type application or an order processing type system (although other suggestions will be considered). Examples include a system to book tickets for a theatre, a flight or a system to allow customers to hire or buy books, tools, cars or else. A case study will be provided on your request but this approach is not a desirable one, since we want you to think and come forward with a scenario drawn from your experience.

  7. Data Modelling & Management Assignment • The minimumfunctionality that the system must demonstrate are as follows: • Search your database for availability /stock levels • Ticket/Stock availability Check • Available prices • Book the ticket /Make the order • Seats Reduction on Booking Acceptance /Stock reduction on purchase • Reduced Cost on student bookings/discount for trade • Customer registration • Confirmation will always issue a unique number that will serve as the customer’s ticket and will also list the name of the customer, the number of tickets booked, the event booked, the total cost and the payment method used

  8. Data Modelling & Management Assignment • You are required to: • Identify what is required and produce relevant models including: • Rich Picture • CATWOE • Root Definition • Conceptual Model • Use Cases & Other relevant UML diagrams • Produce an Entity Relationship Model (ERM) • Use the normalisation process to refine your ERM • Develop the DB system • Implement the back-end of your DB system • Implement the front-end of your DB system • Demonstrate the DB system • Provide documentation for the DB system

  9. Conclusion • Teaching databases in an inter and multi-disciplinary manner: • Does it work? • First cohort of students only; • Comparative study can take place next (academic) year; • Bloom’s Taxonomy – compliance; • Plagiarism.
