  3. A bit of history Christmas: In 320 AD, Pope Julius, along with other religious leaders, spedified December 25th as the probable date of Christ´s birth. The Puritans in America wanted Thanksgiving to be the most important yearly festival instead of Christmas and in 1643, the British parliament actually banned the celebration of Christmas! Nowadays, Christmas is the biggest annual festival in the calendar. Christmas traditions in English speaking countries include singing carols, exchanging presents, decorating a Christmas tree. In England it is common to pull „cracker“ after the Christmas meal – these are made from wrapped paper and can be pulled apart. Inside one half of the pulled-apart cracker is a small present and a piece of paper with a joke on it. The Christmas meal is eaten at lunchtime on December 25th. December 24th is known as Christmas Eve and itś time to socialise with friends.
