Organizations/Rules • New Wave, True Lacrosse, Lacrosse America • 9 Venues • All age levels • Rules can be found at our website @ www.rvofficials.com • Print out all three rules and put them in our bag! • It’s important we officials know the rules at all the locations & keep them consistent. It will allow the game to flow more smoothly without any interruptions or confusion for all of us.
Assignments & Travel • I will be doing ALL the assigning for now. • My philosophy on assigning officials off of self-assign. • Update your availability calendar on Gotofficials. • Accept or Turn back games within 24-hrs. • Don’t self-assign to games you can’t work. • Don’t accept games then turn back. • Plan on working multiple games at all levels. • Keeping you close to home. • Expect to travel to other locations. (REQUIRED) • Communicate & confirm any assignment changes to me the next day!
Professionalism • Look the part! • Arrive early – 20 minutes minimum! • Know the rules for that particular organization. • Be consistent with your calls. • Respect coaches, players & parents! • Answer coaches questions, not there comments. • I will not tolerate disrespect towards coaches. • Do NOT at any time scream, yell or raise your voice at coaches/players! • Flag bad behavior, profane or obscene language. • No profanity or taunting will be tolerated.
Mechanics & Positioning Work opposite of player benches. Keep players in front of you at all times. Never turn your back away from play or players! Talk to players, warn them of hits/pushes near the wall. Off ball & dead ball officiating is critical. Watch players, anticipate bad behavior/play! Position yourself between goal crease & midline. (I prefer you favor the crease on both ends) Use good hand signals throughout the game(s). Don’t get complacent out there!
1-Man Mechanics & Positioning • Certify Head coaches and/or league staff on every game • Work far-side away from bench • Position yourself just off & top of goalie crease (5/5) • Watch shooter & passer at all times • Don’t worry about the ball in goal, the players will tell you, protecting that player is much more important! • Be aware of any counts (goalie, over the mid-line) • Be aware of over & back if applicable. • Be aware of slaughter rule – Face-offs or not? • Crease violations, get them!
2-Man Mechanics & Positioning • Certify Head coaches and/or league staff on every game • Trail – position yourself just inside the midline • Lead – position yourself GLE. • Trail - watch shooter & passer at all times • Lead – you have ball and crease • Lead/trail – has 4 & 10 second counts • Be aware of over & back if applicable. • Be aware of slaughter rule – Face-offs or not? • Crease violations, get them!
Player Safety • Protect these players! PREVENTIVE OFFICIATING! • Anticipate hits, slashes, pushes & screens. • Be verbal out there, always talking & warning. • Special attention to play near the boards! • Loose balls situations near the boards – SHUT IT DOWN! only bad things happen. • Slashes & Poke checks – GET THEM EARLY! • Pushes, checks & hits into the board are an automatic 2-minutes non-releasable. • Stop the game if you feel it’s getting out of hand! • This indoor game is not to be played physical.
Points of Emphasis • Protect the players – Player safety 1st! • Know the rules • Call it early & be consistent (slashes, pushes, high hits) • Always be aware of players near & around the boards; with possession & loose balls. • Preventive officiating – Always talking to players • Keep players in front of you, don’t turn your back • Keep control of the game! • Respect players, coaches, parents & the game. • Be professional at all times!
RVOA Philosophy, Misc… • Face-offs • Certify both coaches before every game! • Mouth pieces/guards • Shoulder pads • Proper Goalie equipment a must • Off-sides & crease violations • No unnecessary checks/hits! • NO TAKE OUT CHECKS! • Keep games on schedule & ON-TIME!
