  4. Establish line of communication Letter, friend, proposal, suggestions Identify facilitator or go-between Someone mutually acceptable to you and your former partner Counselling/mediation No Communication?

  5. Communication Strategies: 1 • Agree base rules from beginning • Positive portrayal of other parent • Keep language friendly

  6. Communication Strategies: 2 • Take to time to answer (sleep on it) • Copy/ask for relevant information to/from other parent • If other parent makes a request, and you like it, say ‘Yes’. … And ask for the same for yourself.

  7. Communication: Don’ts • Don’t use children as go-between to pass messages • Don’t use children as a weapon • Don’t respond to children’s reporting of other parent’s negative comments

  8. Communication: Do’s • Discuss new partner’s role regarding children • Never be afraid to say ‘Yes’ • Never be afraid to say ‘No’ • Remember that you are important • Assure children that Mam and Dad love them

  10. Emotional Management: Don’ts • Don’t take out your anger on friends/family/ work colleagues • Don’t bottle up your emotions • Don’t use children for emotional support • Don’t become physical • Don’t get wound up … count to 20!

  11. Emotional Management: Do’s • Own your own emotions • Keep in contact with friends/family • Channel anger positively • Consider counseling?

  12. Emotional Management: 3 • Take a break, holiday • Alternative relaxation • Have an outside interest • Keep a balance in life • Crisis = Opportunity

  14. Health: 1 • Learn to relax/proper sleep • Accept/don’t hide your situation • Seek self-help groups • Everything in moderation

  15. Health: 2 • Don’t be afraid to express emotion • Learn to laugh, cry and enjoy yourself • Eat good food • Balance work and health • Look good … feel good

  16. Health: 3 • Avoid rebound relationships • Exercise regularly • Personal hygiene • Write down your thoughts – for your benefit, not for others to read
