FOR ONLINE ASSIGNMENTS. By: Nnenna Esiaba Sec 011
Online assignment is one of those assignments I don’t think should be done away with. Instead, they should be promoted and used in all schools. Here are some reasons I am all for online assignments: • Convenience • Pacing • Cost Saving • Technical Knowledge • E.t.c
Convenience • Students can work from anywhere, at anytime as long as there’s internet access. • Students don’t have to leave their houses or jobs in order to turn in assignments. It can be done in the comfort of their bedrooms or work desks. • Gas prices are high, and one doesn’t have to waste gas just to drive to school in order to turn in an assignment.
PACING • An online assignment usually allows students to set their own pace as long as it is completed within a particular time frame. • It allows for students to be responsible. By timing themselves and getting the assignments done before the deadline. • It allows for time management, because the assignments are usually timed. Thereby leaving the student no choice but to get the assignment done in that time period given.
Cost saving • One doesn’t have to spend money printing out assignments to turn in. • It saves the trees, since papers aren’t being used for online assignments. • It saves one money by not having to buy the resources e.g. stationary needed for the assignment. • It saves one money by not having to pay for transportation (either public transportation or gas money for a car) to school in order to turn in an assignment.
Technical knowledge • It improves a student’s computer and internet knowledge. • It allows for a student to be more familiar with the computer and will aid in making them internet savvy. • Also, it will introduce students to skills they can use elsewhere • It allows a professor to think beyond the limitations of paper-based assignments, and to create new ways to enhance the students’ learning.
Other Reasons Include • Refocus classroom time: With traditional assignments, a professor can have students cover content and do activities outside of class time so that in-class time can be spent other ways. For example, students can engage in an online discussion and then be able to bring that knowledge to class for a more in-depth discussion. Or a pre-class quiz can highlight problem areas for the professor to focus on during lecture. In-class hours can be reduced by assigning online assignments. • Encourage reluctant participants: Online assignments, particularly discussions, can allow even the most reluctant participants to join in a discussion. The online nature of such assignments gives students an opportunity to reflect and generate a response to a particular question – time not necessarily allowed in a face-to-face, synchronous discussion.
Other reasons include (contd.) • It accommodates different learning styles and levels: Online assignments can have a multi-modal designs, for example, graphics, text, audio, virtual hands-on activities, etc., and if designed appropriately, can also help students reach new learning levels or think more deeply or critically about a given concept. • Give instant feedback to students: Instead of students having to wait for assignments to be graded and returned, they get instant feedbacks. This way, they know immediately what concepts they need to work on, and which they already understand. This can also help instructors to identify unclear concepts or students who may need remedial assistance.
Other reasons include (contd.) • Archive course information: Online assignments also allow for an archive to be created of relevant course information and discussions. This information can be used by students at a later date while studying for a test or exam, or by the instructor to create a Frequently Asked Questions page or to measure students’ understanding of key concepts. • http://www.assignmentexpert.com/
With all these reasons listed and explained, I hope online assignments will be incorporated more often in educational institutions. Watch This!!
