Specific Needs • Clothing should contribute to the dignity of persons who depend upon others. • It is difficult to find ready to wear garments that are designed to meet the needs of the physically challenged.
Limited Hand Movement • restricts the individual from working with their hands freely. • Trouble with fastening garments with back openings • Require larger arm openings/ raglan sleeves • Difficulty or impossible to button garments • Difficulty aligning buttonholes or buttons • Best to use velcro
What is needed • Front openings • Wrap around styles • Velcro closures • Zippers with pull rings • Zippers for leg openings • Longer length zippers • Elastic waistline
What is needed • Braces on legs require durable fabrics due to friction points. Reinforcement is a must in these areas. • Walkers, crutches, wheelchairs
Visual Problems • Problems with telling the front from the back. • V-necklines are best • Appliqué designs • Identify colors and what goes together. • Small pieces of rick-rack added assist in identifying necklines and front from back.
Fabrics • Easy care fabrics that are not too bulky. • Fabrics that will not wrinkle easily • Moderate weight knits • Should allow comfort and ease of movement. • Larger size garments will prevent skin problems not interfere with circulation
