Our Senses and our environment
The 7 characteristics of Living Things Movement – Animals move to find food and keep away from predators, plants move to face the light Reproduction – the ability to produce offspring to keep the species in existence Sensitivity – responding and reacting to the environment Nutrition – Animals need food for respiration, plants need minerals from the soil Excretion – Getting rid of waste Respiration – Turning food into energy Growth – Growing larger and stronger becoming adult size
Do you know ? Sensitivity – responding and reacting to the change in environment is called stimulus. Change in environment is called stimuli
- One of the common characteristic is that living things can detect stimuli and react to them. - To do this, living things must be able to detect changes in the environment or stimuli
Do you know ? What are the sense organs that detect different stimuli?
Eye Ear Nose Skin Tongue 5 sense organs in humans (Hearing) (Sight) (Smell) (Touch) (Taste)
Which sense organ helps Mrs Wong to hear the phone call? Why can Lily detect the burning smell? Which sense organ does Jimmy use to detect the taste of the banana? How Grandfather knows the tea is hot? Look at the following diagram and see how important our senses are.
Importance of sensing the environment 1 Helps us avoid danger. E.g.Lily can smell smoke from a fire. Mr. Singh can see obstacles in front of him. Grandfather can sense that the tea is hot. 2 Helps usdetect messages and communicate. E.g.Mrs Singh can hear people talk. 3 Offers us feelings. E.g.Julie can taste and smell the food and watch TV.
For other animals, sense organs help them avoid danger, find food and shelters...
Ear Eye Nose Skin detects sound detects light detects smell tongue detects temperature, touch, pressure and pain detects taste p.66 - Each kind of sense organ has its own sensory cells Different kinds of sensory cells detect different kinds of stimuli.
- When a sense organ detects a stimulus, a message will be sent to the brain. - The brain interprets and analyzes the message and a sense will be produced.
Do you know ? p.66 Special methods used by other animals to sense the environment How do other animals like snakes, honey bees, mosquitoes and fish sense the environment? Find this out from the library or the internet.
