Attendance Always report your child’s absence • Call in to the front office at 281-234-1900 • Email the Attendance Clerk SteffineDThompson@KATYISD.ORG • Link on Shafer Elementary Website (for the day of and before 10 a.m.) Anytime your child is seen by a healthcare professional, it is always in the best interest of the student to provide an excuse note. This allows the absence to be specified as excused versus unexcused. (This applies to full day and partial day absences.)

  5. Registration To qualify for kindergarten, the child must reside in FPSE attendance zone and be five years old on or before September 1, 2019. Required Documents • Proof of residence (current gas, water or electric bill) • Birth certificate or passport • Socials security card (optional) • Parent drivers license or passport • Proof of immunizations You must bring the original documents to registration!

  11. Nurse • Students must be fever free for 24 hours without medication before they may come • back to school. • Include a Ziploc bag with an extra set of clothes in your child’s bag.

  12. Birthday Treats • Birthday treats must be small, nut free, store bought with ingredient label that includes sugar and carb count. The treats will need to be checked by the clinic before 10am.

  16. Arrival • Children will be permitted to arrive on campus and enter the school building at 7:40am. • Children will go directly to their classroom, unless they are eating breakfast. • Parents will be able to walk their child to the classroom the first 3 days of school.

  17. School Readiness • Writes first name • Identifies: • Letter names • Letter sounds • 2D shapes • Numbers 0-5 • Can fasten clothing i.e. zippers, buttons, laces

  18. Social Readiness • Shares toys • Plays and gets along with others • Follows simple directions • Takes turns • Shares adult attention

  19. Physical Readiness • Can use restroom independently • Holds and writes appropriately with a pencil or crayon • Uses crayons, scissors and glue correctly • Dresses self and buttons/snaps shirts and pants and zippers • Can put on shoes and coats without help

  20. A Typical Day in Kindergarten • Developmental Centers/Morning Meeting/Morning Message • Focus Poetry • Reader’s Workshop • ELT/Literacy Workstations • Lunch • Recess • Handwriting • Phonics • Writing Workshop • Specials • Snack • Math • Math Stations • Science/Social Studies • Dismissal

  21. Lunch • 30 minutes daily in cafeteria • Children will go through the line themselves • Prepaying with Meal Pay Plus is encouraged • ID badges required for purchases • Parents and Grandparents may visit in the cafeteria. We encourage just once a week. • Healthy choices are encouraged • Teachers help students with lunches in cafeteria. • Parents are asked to hold off on visits for lunch until after Labor Day so that the children can learn the rules and routines.

  22. Specials • Rotation schedule for PE, Art, and Music • Wearing tennis shoes daily is preferred • Girls wear shorts under dresses

Snack • Students will bring an individual, healthy, nut-free snack for themselves daily • All snacks must be ready to eat and should be able to be eaten in 10 minutes or less • Please do not send juice with snacks • No refrigeration/heating of snacks will be provided • Please do not send anything that requires a spoon. • Examples: goldfish, pretzels, crackers, fruit

  24. Library • Scheduled weekly times for check out • Each child may check out one book at a time, usually starting around October • There will be library lessons every other week

  25. Procedures • In case of an emergency and we need to get a hold of you, please make sure to let your child’s teacher and registrar, Denise Thompson, know if your address or phone number changes.

  26. Birthdays • Please do not send invitations to school. We will have a sign up flyer at the beginning of the year and the homeroom parent will contact parents with further information. • Students will eat the store bought birthday treats the last 10 minutes of lunch. • Great options include: glazed donuts, cookies or mini cupcakes

  27. Transportation • Faculty and staff supervise children during arrival and dismissal. • Please try to keep the mode of transportation for going home consistent day to day. • Children get stressed when it changes! • Any changes on how your child will go home will need to be in writing to the front office or sent to shafertransportation@katyisd.org before 2pm.

  28. Biker/Walkers • All Kindergarten walkers must have a parent meet them at the opposite side of the crosswalk unless they have a sibling in 3rd, 4th, or 5th grade. They will not be released to cross unless a parent is visible. • North biker/walker will meet at the crosswalk at Cinco Ranch Blvd. and Ranch Point Dr. • South biker/walkers will meet at the crosswalk beside Goddard and Ranch Point Dr.

  29. Backpacks • Large enough to hold folder, large library book and change of clothes • Easy to open and close • No rolling backpacks PLEASE!

  30. Money • All money sent to school must be in an envelope or Ziploc bag with your child’s name, teacher’s name and what the money is for written on it.

  31. PTA Ways to Stay Connected: • Shafer Elementary School PTA Facebook page – updated and posts small things throughout the summer and also have volunteer opportunities • http://shaferelementary.my-pta.org- the website that has a school store, info, volunteer opportunities, Watchdog info, and much more

  32. PTA • Shafer Knightly Newsletter – it is sent out to every parent/guardian on Fridays through the year • Website link to order school supplies will be on the PTA Facebook page and website when it becomes available. • We love our volunteers!

  33. Preparing for the New School Year Help your child prepare for this exciting school year by: • Making sure he or she is receiving plenty of rest • Meals should be nutritious • Encourage your child to be polite and to state feelings • Provide numerous opportunities for experiences with books • Help your child begin writing his or her name correctly. The first letter should be capital and the rest lowercase • Encourage your child to do some things on their own. Independence will build self-esteem and self-confidence • Practice opening up their own lunch containers/juice boxes

  34. Kindergarten Pre-Assessments • Kindergarten teachers will be conducting pre-assessments on all kindergarteners: Date to be announced. • Please arrive through the Kindergarten Driveway doors. More information is to come: emails/sign up

  35. Meet the Teacher • In August, we will have our Shafer Meet the Teacher Night. • Please bring your child’s school supplies. If you pre-ordered from PTA, the supplies will be delivered to your child’s classroom (highly recommended)
