Rotary Club of Alamo I 680/Stone Valley Road Interchange Beautification Project
JOHN MONTGOMERY LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTSJ M L A“G A R D E N A R C H I T E C T U R E”
KEY ASPECTS TO THE PLAN • Beautification of overall site. • Create strategic focal points to add interest, character, and community identity. • Create a cohesive community statement w/ use of stone playing on the idea of “Stone Valley Road”. • Reduce water use expenses w/ use of large areas of river cobble instead of plants. • Reduce maintenance expenses w/ use of large areas of river cobble and mulch to cut back weeding, mowing, and spraying. • Community project participation; Rotary, MAC, Caltrans, Corporate & Individual sponsors. • Ideas to make site “sustainable” • Reduce cost and consumption of resources such as water, labor, etc. • Reduce need for pesticides, herbicides, & fungicides. • Possibly implement rainwater harvesting techniques for storage of irrigation water. • Install barn owl nesting houses to deter gopher & ground squirrel damage. • Possibly create “Bio-swales” for storm water run-off purification.
I-680/STONE VALLEY ROAD INTERCHANGE

DESIGN CONCEPT: BOULDERS, GRASSES; BOULDERS WOULD BE SETBACK AS PER TREE SETBACK REQUIREMENTS.
Worked with John Montgomery to develop a plan • Met with Caltrans to review the plan and went with their Adopt – a Highway program • Alamo Rotary has been trained by Caltrans on working in traffic areas • Met with staff from State Senator Mark DeSaulnier, Assemblywoman Joan Buchanan, and District III Supervisor Mary Piepho and all are supportive of this project • Mulch has been laid down in some areas by Caltrans based on request from Supervisor Piepho and the Alamo MAC • A member of Alamo Rotary has agreed to donate the small boulders needed for the project • A member of Alamo Rotary has agreed to build the nesting box(s) for the owls • Article has been published in Alamo Today to help gain community support • Received bid for the two “Welcome to Alamo” boulders • Working to obtain a favorable price for the trees and plants
Estimated costs of plan as presented • Cost for trees at retail – 100 trees at $75/ea = $7500 • Cost for plants at retail – 450 one gallon at $10/ea = $4500 • Granite “Welcome to Alamo” boulders = $14000 • Fertilizer, water system, transportation, and taxes = $9000 • Total = $35000
What can the MAC do to help • MAC approval and support of the project • Assistance in generating community support • Any funding assistance the MAC could provide • Support in generating funding from other public entities such as R7A
