  1. Exam Performance How to maximise your grade on the day!

  2. The most important thing of all!!!! Believe in yourself!! • A positive attitude will go a long way to maximising your grade. • Remind yourself of all the work you have done in preparation. You’ve done 3 years of work getting ready for this and you know a lot! • Tell yourself that you can do this. “Is féidirlinn!!”

  3. Pre exam tips • Prepare everything you need the night before: pens, pencils, calculator, maths set, a drink. • Follow your normal routine, e.g. what time you get up, what you have for breakfast, how you get to school, etc. This will help keep you calm. • Arrive in plenty of time. Chat with your friends, go to the toilet and get to your desk 5-10 minutes before the start.

  4. Start of the exam • When handed the paper, leave it closed. Close your eyes and take 3-5 deep breaths. This will clear your mind and leave you focused and relaxed(ish!!) Now you are ready to read the paper. • Read the 1st section of the exam (Q.1-6). As you read, note down any question you know how to start. When you’re finished reading this, you will have a long list of questions that you’re good at and you will feel confident tackling the exam. • Your brain will take care of the ones you don’t know how to do-yet! • Now start the 1st section with the questions you find easiest, leaving the more difficult ones until the end. • Then repeat the process for the 2nd and 3rd sections (Q.7-12 and Q. 13-end).

  5. The rest of the exam • Remember you get marks for any correct work so make an attempt even if you don’t think it’s right. An extra couple of marks could be the difference between a C and a B. • If you go blank, don’t panic! Take a few deep breaths and then re-read the question. If you still don’t know what to do, move on and come back to it later. • When finished, check all your answers. Don’t lose a grade because you said 3x2=5!! • Finally, no post mortems! There’s nothing you can do about the exam afterwards so forget about it and focus on the next one-that you can affect!

  6. Finally… Believe in yourself!! Remember the power of positive thinking.
