Expectations and Procedures Expectations Procedures • Students will come to class prepared each day. • Students will respect themselves, their classmates and their belongings. • Students will create a life-long love of learning. • Homework in planner should be discussed and signed nightly. • Reading Log: Students are expected to read each night for a minimum of 20 minutes and to respond using various reading strategies. • Students are expected to complete assigned homework each night. • Projects that explore a subject in more depth. These projects may require research outside of class and also provide valuable lessons in time-management skills.
Curriculum Overview • Language Arts: Reading, Writing, Word Study, Speaking, Listening • Math: Number Sense, Geometry, Algebra, Measurement, Data and Graphing • Social Studies: Geography, The Age of Exploration (1500-1800) • Science: FOSS Kits Explorations in Chemistry, Astronomy, Environment
Language Arts: Reading • Read Alouds. • Mini-Lessons covering reading strategies that will help students to become independent and successful readers. • Silent Reading -or- Guided Reading -or- Literature Circles. Individual and group conferences. Whole class books will be supported for various individual reading abilities . • Reading Logs: Students will respond to personal outside reading in reading log, turning in according to given schedule.
Language Arts: Writing • Writer Talks • Mini-Lessons exploring various writing strategies • Different genres • Writing Journals -or- Writing Projects • Author’s Chair • Publications • Peer Conferences • Teacher Conferences
Language Arts: Word Study • Making Connections Students will use spelling words to make connections between other words and recognize patterns in spelling. • Interactive Edit Students will correct conventions in writing samples, such as capitalization, organization, spelling and punctuation. • Word Work Students will work with words to learn more about analogies, synonyms, antonyms, root words, prefixes, suffixes, etc. • Grammar Students will develop an increased understanding of grammar including parts of speech and tenses.
Language Arts: Speaking and Listening • Discussions Students will courteously participate in small group and class discussions with clear content focus. • Presentations Students will practice giving individual and group presentations within the class, pushing to speak with good volume, clearly, and with meaningful expression. • Listening Students will learn active listening skills to help with classroom learning and personal interactions. • Conventions Students will speak in complete sentences. *** All of these skills are practiced in the daily morning meeting.

Supporting your child at Home • Read and review the your child’s assignments. • Have your child read aloud to you and sign literature log. • Engage your child in conversations about what they are reading and learning. Read and discuss their work. • Check the assignment book nightly for homework, notes from the teacher, upcoming projects, due dates, information and events. • Feel free to contact the teacher with any comments, questions or concerns throughout the yearvia email or arranging a conference through the ES office.

Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) Parent Agreement As the parents/guardians of __________________________, we give permission for our child to bring and use a personal device (digital camera, smart phone, tablet, laptop, etc.) at school during designated times set by the teacher (7:00 am-2:40 p.m.) being No device should be used outside of the classroom directly supervised by an adult. unless For times when the device is not required for learning, students are expected to keep it locked in the classroom in order to prevent theft.
