How WW1 Started PowerPoint on World War I How it started
How it started • During the beginning of the 20th century, there were 3 big alliance groups. • These controlled big empires all over the world. These were fuses waiting for the spark to go off.
And it did • The heir to the Austrian-Hungary throne was Franz Ferdinand and he was going to a trip to Bosnia. He was in a open top car and only ordered 150 policemen on duty. • Bosnia was controlled by Austria-Hungary but loads of Serbians lived there. Serbia was not owned by Austria-Hungary and a group of 6 assassins formed a group called the Black Hand Gang. • The Black Hand Gang went to kill Franz Ferdinand to scare off Austria-Hungary from Bosnia
This Plan Failed • Despite killing Franz Ferdinand and his pregnant wife Sophie, this didn’t scare off Hungary. • This was the spark for World War One. • This then kicked off the Alliance Groups. • Firstly, there was a problem for Germany. They were surrounded by Russia and France.
The Schlieffen Plan • This was basically 2 armies for Germany. A northern army and a southern army with the ratio to 10:1. • The Southern army were to drag out the French army away from Paris and the northern army to attack. • This plan would sandwich France and surrender in 6 weeks. • Hopefully, Russia won’t have mobilised for 12 weeks leaving 6 weeks to attack Russia with the northern and southern army. • However, this didn’t plan out!
Von Moltke • Von Moltke took over as army general as Schlieffen died before the start of the war. • He didn’t like the fact the ratio between the armies was 10:1. He changed the ration to 10:4. • Then the southern army were too good and forced the French army back to Paris. • Not only that, Britain helped Belgium's army so the Northern army couldn’t get to Paris either. • Also, Russia mobilised in 6 weeks, not 12 weeks leaving Russia as well attacking Germany.
